The National Weather Service (NWS) has posted yet another statement about sneaker waves being quite likely - extended well into the weekend for everywhere.

Extreme caution is urged. One beachgoer was swept out into the sea this week in Lincoln City and drowned. Tragic Death in Lincoln City Surf Sunday During Varied Wave Alerts on Oregon Coast

“A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when sneaker waves create potentially life-threatening conditions in the surf zone,” the NWS said. “Caution should be used when in or near the water. Always keep an eye on the waves, and be especially watchful of children and pets.”

On the north Oregon coast, hazardous conditions are expected to continue through Thursday. However, the NWS said conditions will get harsh again on beaches over the weekend, recently issuing sneaker wave alerts for areas north of Florence and into southern Washington.

For the southern Oregon coast, the situation is more severe. Swells on Tuesday night are peaking between 15 and 17 feet at 18-second intervals, with breaking waves in the surf zone reaching heights of 21 to 24 feet. As a result, a high surf advisory remains in effect.

Following a brief lull in activity, forecasters anticipate another round of dangerous surf beginning Thursday morning and continuing through the weekend. Areas such as Bandon, Coos Bay, and Brookings are expected to see moderate to heavy long-period west swells, increasing the likelihood of sneaker waves.

“Since the wave heights build and last through much of the weekend, we just opted to issue another high surf advisory to cover the long duration threat,” the NWS said.

On the south coast, waves are expected at 20 - 25 feet just offshore over the weekend. How big they are when coming onshore will differ by terrain.

Officials warn that large breaking waves could inundate beaches and low-lying shorelines, potentially washing over rocks and jetties. Beach erosion is possible, and exposed infrastructure may be at risk of damage. The NWS emphasized that “there is a high risk of sneaker waves during lulls in high surf,” urging the public to remain vigilant.
