Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District (NRFPD) responded Thursday to an aircraft accident at the Pacific City Airport, where crews arrived to find a single-engine plane overturned on its top. Both occupants had already gotten out on their own and were not injured, according to the district.
The agency did not release how the accident happened: if it was take-off, taxiing or landing. As of Saturday morning, neither the FAA or the NRFPD had responded to Oregon Coast Beach Connection.
Small, lightweight Cessna aircraft and what are known as taildraggers can get flipped over by wind during taxiing or even just sitting unoccupied. There have been several such incidents in the U.S. and Australia since 2009 involving Cessna, including one in Los Angeles where the aircraft was simply sitting there with no one inside. Strong gusts hitting the aircraft in just the right area can cause this.

The district recently trained for just such an incident using a different plane
In a statement, the district said the incident underscores the value of its ongoing training program.
“We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated Training Division that not only ensures our crews meet national standards in firefighting and emergency medical services, but also proactively prepares for high-risk, low-frequency incidents such as aircraft emergencies,” the agency said.
The Training Division recently partnered with a member of the Volunteer Firefighters Association — a pilot who owns a similar aircraft — to provide specialized, hands-on instruction. That training focused on aircraft construction, hazards and the challenges responders face during aviation-related emergencies.
The district noted that its personnel routinely prepare for far more than vehicle collisions. Crews respond to airplane accidents, ATV and motorcycle crashes, boat incidents and paraglider emergencies.

“Today’s response is a great reminder of why continuous training matters and how preparation helps keep both our responders and community safe,” the agency said.
Earlier this week, the district responded to a couple of fire east of Pacific City. The primary brush fire was closer to Blaine, known as the Upper Nestucca River Road Brush Fire. NRFPD said Monday the forward spread had been stopped and crews had moved into mop-up mode. The scene was turned over to the U.S. Forest Service, which assumed command, with Oregon Department of Forestry assisting. Tillamook PUD remained on scene, and officials expected the road to reopen shortly. Power in the area was shut off.
