(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – The place has been around long enough that it, too, is part of Cannon Beach history. It occupies a spot held by another famous hotel that helped carve out the tourism industry of the north Oregon coast. Even so, its presence here since the '70s has brought a full half century of bringing its own gold rush of travelers to town. (Courtesy photo)

Now, the Tolovana Inn simply rolls with the punches of each new decade and changes with the times. In fact, it did so just recently. If you haven't been back for awhile you may notice a new look.

Shannon Duffy, a spokesman for the company, said they've done a little redecorating. Well, actually a lot.

“We are proud to announce that as of November 15th, we will have completed a full renovation of all 93 condos at Tolovana Inn,” Duffy told Oregon Coast Beach Connection. “The renovation consisted of new flooring, paint, furniture, fireplace rock treatments and room décor.”

Some of it is really obvious – some a bit more subtle. Either way, the changes are hitting the mark.

“Guests are loving the new look and we are happy to check this off our list,” Duffy said.

Rooms often a have rustic wood floor, upping the beach vibes of the inn. Walls are a kind of off-white to varied pastels yet still somehow gleaming. There's a lot of wood finishes to cabinets and other utility parts of the rooms and architecture. It's backwoodsy and beach finery all at the same time.

Rocky fireplaces continue more of the back-country feel, and again with that classy touch. The new decors include photography of local landmarks that solidify the beachy tidal wave of the senses.

Then there's the more traditional aspects of staying here – the age-old stuff that only nature can provide.

Sitting just steps from that grand sandy expanse of Cannon Beach, Tolovana Inn is nuzzled right up against the shoreline. Haystack Rock in full view, below this landmark the winter scenes can offer up a broiling mass of oceanic chaos, with occasional high tides putting on enough of a show of might they flood the beach access ramp with piles of woody debris. In rarer moments, they rise to attack the sea wall itself.

The north Oregon coast stalwart is a front row seat to that. And that's only the wintry fun. Spring, summer and fall bring the mind-boggling sunsets – and some of these balconies are high enough it may increase your chance of seeing the green flash at sunset.

The Nitty Gritty at Tolovana Inn

You may find some of its amenities are updated from your last visit. One of the long-standing faves is that it's pet friendly.

There's still direct beach access and a host of amenities designed for kicking back, including an indoor saltwater pool, spa, sauna, and fitness center. Complimentary morning coffee, high-speed Wi-Fi, and onsite EV charging stations - including Tesla-compatible units - add convenience to any coastal escape. Pet-friendly accommodations are available, and many rooms feature full kitchens and private balconies or patios for added comfort.

Some rooms or suites are not dog friendly. The lineup of room types includes:

Tolovana’s non-view standard rooms offer a cozy retreat with either a queen or king bed. Corner king rooms provide a bit more space and include a microwave and mini fridge, which are ideal for guests who want extra comfort without the oceanfront price tag.

Studios at Tolovana Inn blend charm and functionality, with 525 square feet of space, a queen-size Murphy or stationary bed, gas fireplace, and a full kitchen. While views may vary, each studio includes a private balcony or patio and is designed for two guests. Oceanfront studios offer the same layout with sweeping views of the Pacific, perfect for couples seeking a peaceful retreat.

Other one- or two-bedroom units are a tad bigger, and some are on the oceanfront while others look landward.

Larger groups or families can grab some of the one- or two-bedroom suites, ranging up to 1,090 square feet. These spacious accommodations feature private bedrooms, queen Murphy beds or sofa sleepers in the living area, full kitchens, dining space, and gas fireplaces. Many suites offer ocean views - some unobstructed, others partial - and all include private balconies or patios. 800-333-8890.  3400 S. Hemlock Street  Cannon Beach, Oregon. www.TolovanaInn.com
