(Reedsport, Oregon) – Mushroom season is right around the corner and the Oregon coast is one of the absolute hotspots for this hunt. Among the coveted finds: matsutake mushrooms. Even more coveted are the permits on the south coast. They are limited.
Permits will be available for in-person purchase beginning Sept. 8, the Siuslaw National Forest announced Wednesday. These authorize commercial matsutake collection within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the Central Coast Ranger District.
Sales open at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Reedsport ranger station. After that date, remaining permits will be issued at both the Reedsport and Waldport offices, which operate from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The forest issues 100 commercial permits each year on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Commercial use permits are $200 and are required for any individual gathering more than six matsutake mushrooms per day or for anyone gathering to sell,” said the US Forest Service (USFS). “Each harvester must be age 18 or older and provide valid identification issued by a state or the United States government. Permits are valid from the date of sale through Dec. 31, 2026.”
Forest officials caution that poisonous look-alike species grow in the same areas as matsutakes. Collectors are urged not to dig or rake, to replace soil and debris after removing a mushroom, and to avoid disturbing topsoil.

"American Matsutake (Tricholoma magnivelare) is a preferred edible mushroom that is firm and fibrous with a spicy aromatic scent," the USFS said. "American Matsutake is native throughout a wide range of North America and is most abundant in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California."

More information is available at the Siuslaw National Forest website www.fs.usda.gov/r06/siuslaw/permits/mushroom-permits or by contacting the Reedsport office at 541-271-6000 or the Waldport office at 541-563-8400.
