New Mountain-Biking Trails Open Up on North Oregon Coast – And They're Very Accessible

Tillamook Off-Road Trail Alliance has opened three new routes at the Buzzard Butte Trail Network, a major step in the build-out of one of Oregon coast's newest mountain-biking areas.

This isn't just any set of trails: they are very accessible for those with that kind of need.

The additions - Mossy Hogs, Wavelength and Skizafernia - bring the network to nearly seven miles of rideable trail. Buzzard Butte sits east of Sand Lake between Cape Kiwanda and Cape Lookout in the Siuslaw National Forest’s Hebo Ranger District. The full project, estimated at about $2 million, is planned to grow to roughly 30 miles of trail and a skills park serving riders from beginner to advanced.

Accessibility is a core part of the build. Later this summer, the Groundswell Adaptive Trail will open, offering a purpose-built route for adaptive mountain bikers on the Tillamook Coast.

Ron Baker, board vice president of TORTA, said the new openings mark a turning point for a project years in the making. He noted that the network has been shaped by thousands of volunteer hours and a vast partnership aimed at expanding high-quality riding opportunities on the Oregon coast.

The trail system is the product of a collaboration between TORTA, the U.S. Forest Service and numerous public and private partners. Funding has come from Travel Oregon, the Oregon State Parks Recreational Trails Program, Shimano’s Trail Born Fund, Kubota, Tillamook County lodging-tax revenue and contributions from volunteers, trail builders, adaptive riders and advocates.

Travel Oregon’s Director of Stewardship Investments, Michelle Woodard, said the agency’s support reflects its goal of making Oregon’s outdoor recreation accessible to all. She pointed to Buzzard Butte’s inclusive design as a model for ensuring riders using adaptive bikes can access the area.

To coincide with the trail openings, Visit Tillamook Coast has released a short film showcasing the project and its focus on accessible recreation. “Buzzard Butte Trail Network | Accessible Adventure on the Tillamook Coast” follows adaptive riders Quinn and Joe as they preview the Groundswell Adaptive Trail with local builders and advocates.

"Outdoor recreation should be something more people can experience and enjoy, regardless of ability," said Dan Haag, interim executive director of Visit Tillamook Coast. "What makes Buzzard Butte special is that accessibility wasn't treated as an afterthought. It was part of the conversation from the beginning. We're proud to support this film because it showcases the partnerships and commitment that are helping create more inclusive outdoor experiences on the Tillamook Coast."
