Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) said it will close trails at two south coast parks in mid- and late October for various projects. Both are in the Port Orford area.
“This is a regular part of OPRD’s stewardship and supports healthy ecosystems,” OPRD said.
At Humbug Mountain State Park, the Humbug Mountain Trail is scheduled to close for about two weeks beginning Monday, October 19. The agency is treating a sudden oak death infestation affecting tanoak trees. All tanoak within a 21-acre area will be cut, and stumps treated with herbicide to prevent resprouting.
Officials say the work is needed to slow the spread of the pathogen, first detected in Oregon in 2001, and to reduce wildfire risk by removing dead and declining trees.

At Cape Blanco State Park, the horse trail system will close for roughly three weeks starting Monday, October 26. Crews will thin trees across 34 acres to improve habitat for the endangered western lily. The project includes removing seedlings, saplings and other encroaching trees to open space for meadow species and protect the sensitive lily area.
