(Pacific City, Oregon) - There is a high threat of sneaker waves from Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8 along the entire Oregon coast, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). While there may be temporary lulls between wave events, the danger will persist throughout the weekend as multiple west swell systems move through coastal waters.
“Waves can run up significantly farther on a beach than normal & surprise beachgoers,” said the NWS. “Sneaker waves can lift or roll large, heavy logs which can lead to serious injury or death. Keep off rocks, logs, and jetties near waterline on beaches. Use caution on beaches, never turn your back on the ocean.”
Beach Hazards Statements:
Late Thursday night through Sunday evening for the North and Central Oregon Coast and South Washington Coast. Sneaker waves possible on area beaches.
10 p.m. Thursday through Friday evening for the South Central Oregon Coast.
Primary Hazard: Sneaker waves capable of surging unexpectedly far up the beach, knocking people down and sweeping them into the ocean.
Timing: Largest waves likely on Sunday.
Breakdown:
The NWS has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for the North and Central Oregon Coast, including Clatsop, Tillamook and Lincoln counties, as well as the South Washington Coast, from late Thursday night through Sunday evening. It has also done so for the south Oregon coast, for areas including Brookings, Bandon, Port Orford, Coos Bay and Reedsport.

“Seas will remain high and steep as westerly swell around 10 to 13 feet at 13 to 17 seconds moves through the waters tonight into Friday, creating conditions hazardous to small craft,” said the Medford office of NWS.
More rough conditions are also expected to amble on in. A prolonged period of high to very high seas is forecast beginning late Saturday night and continuing through Sunday after a cold front moves ashore. Although winds are expected to ease, seas are forecast to build to 15 to 20 feet, with wave periods increasing from 13 to 16 seconds by Sunday evening, further elevating the risk for sneaker waves and hazardous surf conditions.
The active weather pattern is expected to continue into early next week as a series of Pacific storm systems moves into the Northwest.

Shore Acres' show is a possibility. See the wave height forecasts Coos Bay
Over 16 feet for wave height is when Coos Bay starts looking at the possibility of large waves at Shore Acres. It may be worth a look.
Meanwhile, offshore, things are even more chaotic.
A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through Friday morning for the Central and North Oregon Coast, covering waters from Cape Falcon south to Florence. Seas of 9 to 14 feet and gusty south winds of 15 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, will create difficult conditions for smaller vessels.
A Hazardous Seas Warning takes over Friday morning and continues into early Saturday. Mariners can expect very steep, dangerous seas building to 15 to 18 feet along with south winds of 20 to 30 knots and gusts as high as 34 knots. Conditions will be hazardous for all small craft, and operators should use extreme caution or remain in port.
