Another Fatal Accident on Oregon Coast Last Weekend, This Time Involving Pedestrian

(Lincoln City, Oregon) – A sixth traffic-related death on the Oregon coast from this past weekend has just been released by Oregon State Police (OSP), after the agency reported five people died in two different car wrecks last week.

With this third incident, OSP said a pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday night (September 19) on Highway 101 near Gleneden Beach, prompting a lengthy investigation and the arrest of one driver.

OSP said troopers responded at about 8:21 p.m. on September 19 after receiving reports of a person walking in the roadway near milepost 122 in Lincoln County. Investigators said a southbound gray Chevrolet Colorado driven by Renee Ronilyn Wohlwend, 61, of Lincoln City, hit the pedestrian, identified as Nicholas Ryan Perkins, 41, of Portland, who was in or near the travel lane.

Perkins was then struck by two additional vehicles: a southbound white Mercedes Sprinter van driven by Gregory Lear Miller, 34, of Flagstaff, Arizona, and a northbound blue Toyota Sequoia driven by Michael Aaron Hadden, 50, of Depoe Bay.

“The pedestrian (Perkins) was declared deceased at the scene,” OSP said. “None of the involved drivers reported any injuries.”

Miller, the operator of the Sprinter van, was located and detained south of the crash site and taken into custody for failing to perform the duties of a driver.

Highway 101 was affected for roughly four hours while troopers and emergency crews worked at the scene.

OSP was assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln City Police Department, Depoe Bay Fire District, Pacific West Ambulance, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The same day, three people on the south Oregon coast died in a crash that involved two vehicles. It had happened in Myrtle Point. One of the deceased was a four-month-old infant. Two other individuals died near Florence on September 18 (Friday), after the car they were in left the road for unknown reasons and hit a tree.
