(Lincoln City, Oregon) - A boat reportedly became capsized on the central Oregon coast Friday, prompting a quick response by various emergency crews and the safe return of all but one involved. The North Lincoln Fire & Rescue sent out a press release on Friday saying their agency and the Depoe Bay Fire District both responded to a call about a capsized boat at the mouth of Siletz Bay, where multiple people were reported in the water.
The call came in shortly after 1 p.m. on October 16. They were immediately informed that one person had made it out of the ice-cold Oregon coast bay.
“Upon arrival, crews were advised by bystanders that one person had made it out of the water on the north side of the bay, within NLFR's response area, and five additional people were out of the water on the south side, within DBFD's response area,” NLFR said. “Incident command was established near SW 51st Street, and responding crews were directed to both sides of the bay to assist those involved.”

North Lincoln Fire & Rescue deployed its water-rescue personal watercraft after initial reports suggested a seventh person might still be missing. That information was later determined to be incorrect, and all individuals were accounted for.
Four people were evaluated at the scene and released. One person was transported by Pacific West Ambulance to a local hospital; their condition was not known at the time of the release. Another individual was found deceased on the beach.

A total of eight apparatus and 18 personnel responded. Agencies assisting included Pacific West Ambulance, Lincoln City Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Oregon State Police. OSP will release any further information about the incident.

“Depoe Bay Fire District and North Lincoln Fire & Rescue want to thank the public for their assistance and extend our deepest condolences to the families of those involved,” NLFR said.
Siletz Bay and its river are normally a fairly calm area for watercraft – unless you get too close to the rivermouth. Always check wave conditions and not just tides if you're boating in a bay area next to the ocean waters.
