South Oregon Coast Holidays Gets Warm, Gooey and Illuminated Around Coos Bay

(Coos Bay, Oregon) – So much of the holidays center around the idea of at least a little dusting of snow, and of course the presence of the winter chill. Well, it does get chilly farther south, but this part of the Oregon coast? Not so snowy.

And actually, it's likely going to be warmer than the valley – albeit wetter.

That is the holiday atmosphere of the south Oregon coast's Coos Bay area, including the charming burghs of Charleston and North Bend. There is very literally a warmth to their seasonal aspects.

However, the area really kicks into life with its vibes. So much going on here – so little time.

South Oregon Coast Ice Skating Tradition Returns: That's Right, Ice Skating - Ice Skating rink in North Bend starts again Nov 21

November TBD, 2026 - January 1, 2027. Oregon Coast Historic Railway Museum Lights. This downtown Coos Bay tradition features vintage railroad engines, cabooses and other historic equipment covered in 100,000 lights and ornaments. You'll be able to see it all just driving by along the south Oregon coast's Hwy 101. Or from the sidewalk. Little ones always enjoy spotting the stuffed animals placed in the train windows; the lights run nightly from dusk to 11 p.m. and the display is always free. Location: Oregon Coast Historic Railway Museum, Coos Bay.

November 20 - 21, 2026. Holiday Market at Coos History Museum. Local artisans, craftspeople, food vendors and more gather at the museum for a festive two-day holiday market, offering a chance to shop for handmade gifts and seasonal treats. Entry to the market is free. Location: Coos History Museum, Coos Bay.

November 28, 2025. Tree Lighting at the Coos Bay Visitor Center with Santa Plus a Santa Parade & Visit with the Kiddos. Santa listens to children’s wishes from 3-5 p.m. at the Coos Bay Downtown Association office at 320 Central Ave, then leads a walking lighted parade to the Visitor Center. Yummy time: cookies and cider begin at 4:30 p.m. inside the Visitor Center for those not joining the parade. Santa lights the tree at 5:45 p.m. in the Visitor Center parking lot. Location: Santa visits at 320 Central Ave, Coos Bay; Tree lighting at Coos Bay Visitor Center, 50 Central Ave, Coos Bay.

November 28, 2025. Shop Small Saturday in Downtown Coos Bay and North Bend. Shoppers are encouraged to support small, local businesses in both downtown districts the Saturday after Thanksgiving, embracing the day as a holiday shopping tradition while helping neighborhood shops thrive on the Oregon coast. Location: Downtown Coos Bay and Downtown North Bend.

December 1 - 12. Elf on the Shelf Makes Mischief in North Bend. During the 12 days of Christmas, participating North Bend businesses host their own mischievous Elf on the Shelf, which moves to a new spot inside the business each day. Visitors who find the elf can enter to win a gift, with one winner chosen per business and each person eligible to win at only one location. Location: Participating businesses throughout North Bend.

December 1 - 3, 2026. Festival of Trees Holiday Showcase and Benefit Auction. Ko-Kwel Casino Resort displays beautifully decorated trees and wreaths created by local businesses and organizations on December 1 and 2, followed by a dinner and auction on December 3 where all trees are auctioned to benefit the programs of the Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club. Location: Ko-Kwel Casino Resort, North Bend.

December 4, 2026. Empire District Tree Lighting, Caroling and Santa Visit. The Empire District hosts its annual holiday celebration featuring a tree lighting, caroling and visits with Santa from 5-7 p.m., with additional details to be announced. Location: Empire District, Coos Bay.

December 4 - 6, 2025. Christmas Opry in December. The “Little Ole Opry on the Bay” returns to Liberty Theatre with a family-friendly holiday show featuring both traditional and contemporary music, including songs ranging from “Away in a Manger” to “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Performances are at 7-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Location: Liberty Theatre, 2100 Sherman Ave, North Bend.

December 5, 2026. North Bend’s Christmas On Main. Downtown North Bend transforms into a Winter Wonderland with ice skating, the city’s tree lighting and a festive lighted truck parade, creating a full evening of holiday celebration. Location: Downtown North Bend.

December 6 - 7, 2026. Bay Area Concert Band Fall into Winter Concert Series Featuring the Coos Singers. Marshfield High School Auditorium fills with holiday music as the Bay Area Concert Band performs seasonal selections, the Coos Singers present holiday favorites, and both groups join for a finale; concerts take place Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m., free with donations welcome. Location: Marshfield High School Auditorium, 972 Ingersoll Ave, Coos Bay.

January 1, 2027. Plunge into 2027 at the Polar Bear Plunge. The new year begins with a brisk 9 a.m. dip at Sunset Bay State Park, inviting participants to kick off 2027 with the traditional Polar Bear Plunge. Location: Sunset Bay State Park, Coos Bay. SEE MORE COOS BAY'S SITE.
