South Oregon Coast Ice Skating Tradition Returns: That's Right, Ice Skating

(North Bend, Oregon) – When you think skating on ice, you're more likely to be picturing places inland – like Portland, Salem or certainly the towns of the Cascade Range. Probably even that Jethro Tull song comes to mind.

Yet there's a little place on the south Oregon coast that's known for this, inside and outside of the holiday season.

That's right: ice skating on the south Oregon coast.

Indeed, it's a North Bend thing. This year it starts November 21 and goes through February 14, 2027.

It's the only ice skating rink on the coastline, offering a seasonal skating experience inside a large, weather-protected tent. Skaters can rent a pair of skates for five dollars, or skate for free with their own equipment. Payment is accepted by cash, credit card, or check made payable to the City of North Bend.

But how, you may ask, does ice skating work in a temperate place like the south coast?

It's an artificial type of ice and it's now a happenin' for both locals and visitors alike. Every year, this “cool” installation appears in mid November and goes until the end of January – sometimes even Valentine's Day.

It may be fake ice, but it's the real thing in terms of ice skating.

The structure is shielded from coastal winds by surrounding buildings, allowing skating to continue regardless of weather. Seating is available for spectators, who are encouraged to dress warmly due to the cold conditions inside the tent.

They sometimes max out, but you may enter at no cost as long as space is available.

A series of themed skating nights will be held throughout the season, including disco, movie, costume, and karaoke nights. Details and schedules will be posted on the rink’s Facebook page.

All this began as an inspired attempt by city officials at snagging a few more visitors during the off-season. It worked. Now, the attraction is one of the big draws on the coastline – especially one that isn't permanent.

To assist younger or less experienced skaters, the rink provides four polar bear–style balance aids designed to help users navigate the synthetic ice. That's the large, colorful walker-like things you see some pushing around in the photos here.

This little getaway is one of our 'got to' spots on the Oregon coast. Recently updated, friendly staff, clean and comfortable, good access to the beach and that wonderful view, oh my.
