(Seaside, Oregon) – Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is getting to work on some new projects on the Oregon coast. One is about to begin on a highway going into the coastline, and two others require the public's input right now.
There's a new roundabout coming to Highway 6 and the construction is going to have some traffic impact.
ODOT, along with the City of Banks and Washington County, is preparing to open a new roundabout at the intersection of OR 6 and NW Aerts Road as part of an effort to improve safety and address future traffic needs in the area.
Beginning in early November, traffic on OR 6 will start work on the area.
During the transition, the south side of NW Aerts Road will be temporarily closed at the roundabout while construction crews remove the temporary bypass road and complete the new roadway connection to the roundabout.
Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling through the work zone, watch for workers and follow posted signs.
ODOT is also reminding travelers to expect multiple construction zones along the OR 6 corridor between Banks and the coast as crews continue work on safety and roadway improvement projects.
Additional information about the roundabout project and planned corridor improvements is available on ODOT project webpages.
Nehalem and Wheeler

Two other major projects on the Oregon coast are still in the planning stages, and ODOT needs your input.
The agency to identify future safety improvements along U.S. 101 at Nehalem and Wheeler, aimed at making travel safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
"Our goal is to identify practical, community-supported improvements that make it safer and easier for people to walk, roll, bike and cross the highway," ODOT said.
Potential improvements under consideration include marked crossings, pedestrian-activated signals, curb-ramp upgrades, bicycle facilities and intersection safety enhancements. The study will also examine access to businesses, housing, transit stops, parks and community services.
ODOT is encouraging residents to complete an online survey before Nov. 22 at: https://www.oregon.gov/odot/projects/pages/ project-details.aspx?project=US101-UDV
Members of the public can also meet with project representatives Nov. 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Nehalem at the corner of U.S. 101 and Seventh Street and in Wheeler at 500 Nehalem Blvd.
Seaside Flooding

ODOT is also seeking public input as it studies larger-picture solutions for a three-mile stretch of U.S. 101 near Seaside that experiences seasonal flooding.
The highway serves as a major transportation corridor for coastal residents, freight traffic and tourists traveling between the Oregon coast and the Willamette Valley. Yet seasonal flooding along the route has even created challenges for emergency response, residents and businesses while also causing damage to the roadway.
As part of the study, ODOT plans to establish both a Technical Advisory Committee and a Public Advisory Committee. The groups will include first responders, local residents, business owners, representatives from the North Coast Land Conservancy and elected officials from Clatsop County and the City of Seaside.
ODOT will host a public open house Nov. 10 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Seaside Public Library, 1131 Broadway Street in Seaside, where community members can learn more about alternatives being evaluated as part of the study.
Accessible parking will be available at the front of the building.
On any of these events, individuals requesting disability accommodations or alternative-format materials are asked to contact Caroline Crisp at caroline.crisp@odot.oregon.gov, 503-313-6812, or Oregon Relay Service at 7-1-1 at least 48 hours before the event.
