Central Oregon Coast's Siuslaw Forestlands Will Begin Seeing Pile Burning

(Lincoln City, Oregon) – The onset of fall weather, more rain plus cooler conditions have dampened the risk of forest fires, said the Siuslaw National Forest (SNF) - a turn in weather that has brought about a turn in approach. Not only have campfires resumed normal status in these forestlands (which encompass much of Tillamook, Lincoln and Lane Counties), but they will start seasonal pile-burning operations.

The SNF said all this is opening a window for firefighters to begin doing this on Siuslaw National Forest lands – especially along the Oregon coastline - with work expected to start as early as next week and continue into spring as conditions allow. Fire crews will ignite slash piles only when fire danger is low and will remain on site to ensure flames stay contained.

“Firefighter and public safety are always the top priority during any burning events,” the SNF said. “Burning will only occur if conditions are deemed ideal. Slash piles are generated by restoration projects, vegetation management, non-native invasive plant species removal, and other brush clearing activities. Burning is one of the most effective ways to remove non-merchantable woody debris from the forest before it becomes a hazardous fuel in the dry summer months.”

You'll see pile burning along the Oregon Coast Range foothills first, with plans for both the Hebo and Central Coast Ranger Districts. Firefighters have also prepared a one-acre prescribed burn in the grassy meadow near the parking lot at the Marys Peak Day Use Area. The Forest Service will announce the implementation date once it is set.

They said smoke may be visible from nearby roads, trails and waterways while burning is underway, though officials expect impacts to be minimal. No closures are anticipated: the forest areas cover mostly lands into the hills surrounding Nehalem, Tillamook, Pacific City, Lincoln City, Yachats, Florence and down through Reedsport. Visitors are encouraged to monitor the Siuslaw National Forest alert webpage .

“If you are unsure whether smoke or a fire is from a planned pile burn, you can contact your local fire department, county emergency services or a nearby Siuslaw National Forest Ranger Station,” the SNF said.
