All of the Pacific Northwest coast is under various advisories, which include some very dangerous conditions on the north coast of Oregon and southern Washington beaches, where the National Weather Service (NWS) is even suggesting stay off some beaches altogether.

It does, however, bode well for large wave activity at famous spots like Shore Acres near Coos Bay and Washington's Cape Disappointment.

A roundup of the warnings from NWS:

Beach Hazards Statement Where: North & Central Oregon Coast, South Washington Coast When: Through late Saturday night Hazard: Sneaker waves Details: Higher-than-normal wave run-up on beaches, jetties, and shorelines. Waves may suddenly surge much farther inland than expected.

Beach Hazards Statement Where: South Central Oregon Coast, Curry County Coast When: Until 10 p.m. Friday Hazard: Sneaker waves Details: Elevated sneaker wave threat. Waves may run much farther up beaches than normal and over rocks and jetties.

High Surf Advisory Where: North & Central Oregon Coast, South Washington Coast, Northern Washington Coast, Grays Harbor County Coast. When: 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday Hazard: High surf, sneaker waves Details: Breakers up to 28 feet. Dangerous surf, possible minor beach erosion, waves washing over beaches, rocks, jetties, and shoreline structures.

High Surf Advisory Where: South Central Oregon Coast, Curry County Coast When: 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday Hazard: High surf Details: Breaking waves 22 to 27 feet. Beach erosion possible. Large waves may inundate beaches and low-lying shoreline areas.

High Wind Watch Where: Clatsop County Coast, Tilla.m.ook County Coast, Central Oregon Coast, South Washington Coast When: Saturday afternoon through late Saturday night Hazard: Strong south winds Details: Sustained winds 20 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph possible. Potential for downed trees and power lines, power outages, and difficult travel, especially for high-profile vehicles.

General Safety Advice

• Stay well back from the water's edge and surf zone.
• Keep off jetties, rocks, drift logs, and other shoreline structures.
• Keep children and pets away from the surf.
• Never turn your back on the ocean.
• Avoid entering the water during high surf and sneaker wave events.
• Prepare for possible power outages and secure loose outdoor items ahead of strong winds.
• If someone is swept into the ocean, call 911 and monitor their location from shore.

With some areas of Washington open to clamming, it may not be a good idea to try it on Sunday.

“On Sunday, there is high confidence for an even larger westerly swell of 20-25 ft with a dominant period of 15-17 seconds which will impact the coast,” the NWS said. “Due to the steepness and energy of this swell, a High Surf Advisory has been issued for the entire coast from 0400 to 2200 Sun. Expect large waves with breakers up to 28 ft, hazardous surf conditions, and a continued high threat for sneaker waves. It is advised to either avoid or use a lot of caution if you plan to recreate on area beaches and jetties on Sunday, including those who are razor clamming. High surf will stand the highest chance of producing damage along the coast around high tide on Sunday, which will occur around 11 AM to 12 PM for the north Oregon coast.”

BIG BREAKERS SHOWTIME

Places like Cape Disappointment and Shore Acres have a decent chance of putting on a good show. Currently, the Shore Acres is forecast with a wave height of 20 feet, but the entire south coast region has the possibility of reaching higher.

The usual threshold for Shore Acres' display is above 16 feet or so, and these forecasts present a good chance. It's worth checking out the Coos Bay-area attraction as well as Washington's Cape Disappointment.

You can keep up with these wave height predictions at the Washington coast weather page or the Coos Bay weather page

Seaside Hotel Reviews: JTA223522 - Practicially Perfect by the Prom (five stars)

The place came highly recommended from friends, so I figured it was going to be good. But I wasn't prepared for this awesome. I felt soooo at home. Room with a balcony right on the ocean ? that was incredible. It may not be upscale but it's not far from that at all. Went with the family and our favorite thing was sitting in that enclosed area at dusk, watching the Prom and sipping the early evening away. Just gorgeous all around. Will so be back. 4/12/2025
