(Manzanita, Oregon) - There is something of interest happening in the skies above the Pacific Northwest this weekend, involving both the stars and some neighbors in our solar system. With mostly clear skies above Oregon, Washington and the coast on Sunday, you should get a chance to see Saturn do some outstanding things – and even do a bit of whale watching by looking up. According to Jim Todd, astronomer with Portland's OMSI, Saturn reaches its 2026 opposition on Sunday, October 4, when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the ringed planet. This alignment places Saturn opposite the Sun in our night sky, making it shine at its brightest of the year.
“Following this October alignment, Saturn will remain easily visible in the evening sky for the rest of 2026,” Todd said. “It will finally disappear into the sunset glare in early April 2027.”
Along the Oregon coast and indeed most of inland Washington and Oregon, clear to mostly clear skies are predicted on Sunday night. The region is coming into a spell of summer-like weather as well.

Todd said that around the night of opposition, Saturn rises in the east at sunset, stays up all night, and sets in the west near sunrise. The geometry is exact: Earth sits between Saturn and the Sun, leaving the planet fully illuminated and at its closest point to us for the year - about 784 million miles away. At magnitude +0.3, it will appear noticeably brighter than during any other week of 2026.
Then, check the night sky to spot an interstellar whale around midnight. In areas like Bandon, Portland or Seaside, you should see some wondrous sights.

Todd said that Saturn reaches its highest and clearest position around local midnight, standing in front of the constellation Cetus the Whale, just below the Great Square of Pegasus.

“While good binoculars mounted on a tripod cannot completely separate the rings from the planet, they will reveal Saturn as a bright, distinctly oval-shaped disk,” Todd said. “Any small backyard telescope will easily show the rings and the shadow they cast on the planet's surface. For stargazers and astrophotographers alike, it is the ideal time to view and photograph this superior planet.”
