(Manzanita, Oregon) - The Ocean Inn in Manzanita has an interesting roster of environmental-friendly aspects going on, more so than your average Oregon coast hotel. And it's about to dive in further.
Owner Janice Zagata said they're about to become a certified “Ocean Friendly Hotel” through the Surfrider Foundation.
That is coming in the fall, she said.
“We like what they do and with our efforts to become more earth friendly we fit right in line with the 'Ocean Friendly hotel,' “ said Zagata.
Surfrider Foundation's criteria for becoming an Ocean Friendly Hotel are:
Plastic beverage bottles and plastic shopping bags must not be sold or used anywhere on the property, with the exception of trash liners.
Expanded polystyrene products, such as Styrofoam, are not allowed anywhere onsite.
Guest room items like cups, utensils, straws, and condiments must be either reusable or made from naturally occurring materials. These items must not be packaged in plastic.
Toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion must not be provided in small plastic containers.
Hotels must offer water refill stations onsite for guest use.

Zagata said they're almost there: but the place has been so busy during the summer she hasn't been able to make all the changes.
Ocean Inn at Manzanita has already expanded its commitment to sustainability through a new partnership with Kind Traveler’s Every Stay Gives Back program, directing support to the North Coast Land Conservancy (NCLC). The nonprofit works to permanently protect Oregon’s coastal lands and waters, with a long-term vision of fostering healthy ecosystems where people, plants, and wildlife thrive together.

As part of this initiative, Ocean Inn has launched a community impact program that contributes $1 from every guest stay to NCLC. The hotel will match each dollar donated, ensuring that 100 percent of the funds go directly to conservation efforts along the Oregon coast.

Guests are also invited to take part in the inn’s “Ocean Steward” program, which encourages hands-on environmental action. Visitors who collect micro-plastic debris from Manzanita Beach using the inn’s provided recycled bags or buckets will receive a $20 credit toward a future stay. For each bag or bucket returned, Ocean Inn will donate an additional $1 to the Surfrider Foundation. Guests may redeem up to two bags per stay.
The program offers travelers a chance to contribute directly to coastal preservation while enjoying one of Oregon’s most scenic beach communities. 2 Laneda Ave. Manzanita, Oregon. 503-368-7701. 866-368-7701. www.oceaninnatmanzanita.com.
