(Yachats, Oregon) – Mushrooms are back on the central Oregon coast – including the Yachats Mushroom Festival. Everyone knows that. Now, there's a different kind of festival of fungi hitting the little burgh by the sea.
The popular Mushroom Treasure Hunt has returned to Yachats for another season, giving visitors a chance to seek out handcrafted treasures hidden around the community each weekend. Adorable little shroomies in various materials created by local artists are now the talk of the town.
It started last week and goes until February.
“This year, we’re changing things up,” said organizers.
Under the new format, clues will be released by 10 a.m. each Saturday, directing participants to a general area where a special clay disc has been hidden. Anyone who finds a disc can take it to the Yachats Visitors Center and exchange it for a prize.
“Just like last year, this season we’re making the hunt a little more adventurous,” organizers said.

Clues and photos will lead participants to the general location, but finding the hidden disc remains part of the challenge.
Organizers describe the event as akin to beachcombing on the Oregon coast, but with a unique twist. Limited-edition treasures are hidden each Saturday morning throughout the winter, celebrating "the mycological wonders that sustain the majestic Siuslaw Forest."
This year, three local artists are creating the prizes. Paris Birdwell Designs is producing colorful glass mushrooms featuring vibrant swirls, Billow Cloud Soaps is crafting mushroom-shaped soaps from its signature saltwater blend, and Swallows Nest Homemade is contributing handmade crocheted mushrooms.

"All three artists are making original one of a kind, collectible shrooms with the hope of bringing smiles and encouraging adventure to be a year round endeavor," organizers said.
Each Saturday, after the treasures have been hidden, clues are created and shared to help participants narrow their search area.
"Check in each Saturday morning for clues here and on our @visit.yachats Instagram," organizers said.
The event builds on a tradition that began in 2023, when Yachats launched an experiment hiding artist-created treasures along accessible trails.
It's slowly turning into a new Oregon coast tradition.
"In 2023, Yachats embarked on an experiment with the potential to become a cherished tradition. Every Saturday, the trail gnomes hide artistically crafted sculptures in hidden corners along easily accessible trails, inviting explorers to discover these whimsical treasures," organizers said.
