(Portland, Oregon) – Get ready for more riveting live coverage from space. A cargo spacecraft attached to the International Space Station will soon be detaching, and NASA will provide a live feed of the entire unmanned maneuver.
Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft is set to depart the ISS on Friday, Oct. 9, after delivering more than 11,000 pounds of supplies, research equipment, and other materials for NASA as part of the Commercial Resupply Services-24 mission.
NASA will provide live coverage of the undocking and departure beginning at 12:30 p.m. EDT (5 a.m. in Portland / Seattle / Los Angeles time) across its online platforms.
Flight controllers will command the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm to detach Cygnus from the Unity module’s Earth-facing port and maneuver it into position for release at 12:45 p.m.
“NASA astronaut Luke Delaney will monitor the operation from aboard the orbital complex,” NASA said.

Cygnus is loaded with thousands of pounds of trash and other disposal items for its final maneuver. The spacecraft will perform a controlled deorbit on Sunday, Oct. 11, burning up in Earth’s atmosphere. NASA will not broadcast the deorbit sequence.
The CRS-24 mission began with an April 11 launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
ISS and Aurora Borealis Over Pacific Northwest

There will be a decent – even bright – flyover of the ISS above Oregon, Washington and the coastlines on Thursday, October 15 at 06:42 a.m. It will be bright at a magnitude -2.0.
Times may differ slightly between Pacific Northwest areas like Seattle and Bend, or between Bandon and Bellingham. They are generally similar to Portland listings, which show it as SW to ENE reaching 44 degrees high. It will be visible in areas around the Northwest like Seaside, Newport, Ashland or Spokane for a whopping 10 minutes.
In the meantime, there is also an Aurora Borealis alert from Oregon Coast Beach Connection for Thursday, October 8 (overnight hours of Friday, October 9).
Aurora Borealis possible Oregon, Washington Thursday night / Fri morning.
Space Weather Prediction Center: G2 (Moderate) storm predicted. Best time: midnight to 3 a.m. (preliminary)

“Aurora may be seen as low as New York to Wisconsin to Washington state,” the SWPC said. Likely not visible to the eye – will need cameras. See the Oregon Coast Weather page and its aurora alerts section for updates.
