Video: US Coast Guard Rescues Man from Hammond Jetty / N. Oregon Coast

(Hammond, Oregon) – The normally placid Hammond Marina on the north Oregon coast was the site of a buzz of activity on Saturday after the US Coast Guard (USCG) and local responders went to the aid of an injured man. He was stuck on the jetty, the USCG said, and they were called by local authorities determined the terrain was too unstable for a ground evacuation.

Sector Columbia River watchstanders received the request for assistance at 7:38 a.m. from the Astoria Fire Department, which reported the man was pinned beneath a rock on the jetty. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria launched and reached the scene at 8:51 a.m.

The aircrew hoisted the man from the rocks and transported him to Air Station Astoria, where he was transferred to waiting emergency medical personnel at 9:55 a.m. He was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Video from the incident first shows the helicopter with the rescuer descending onto the jetty.

After snagging the individual, you can hear the words “swimmer and survivor halfway up,” as the footage cuts to the rescue basket about the halfway mark. You can also see the rescuer - the “swimmer” - holding on to the object as well.

You can also hear discussions over communications about taking the man to the hospital.

Chief Petty Officer Patrick Toomey, command duty officer for Sector Columbia River, said the rescue highlighted the value of coordinated response. “Working with first responders on the ground, we were able to provide assistance and ensure the individual was transported for medical care,” he said.

Jetties are a frequent source of issues along the Oregon coast. All local authorities and tourism entities always urge to stay off them, especially in weather with rowdier tides.

Jetties and breakwaters are dangerous: surfaces are often slippery and uneven, unpredictable waves and changing tides can cause large boulders to shift, potentially leading to serious injury. The Coast Guard reminds everyone to remain vigilant on and around these structures and avoid walking on them whenever possible.

“Officials noted that jetties and breakwaters pose significant hazards, with slick, uneven surfaces and shifting boulders that can lead to serious injuries. The Coast Guard urges the public to use caution around these structures and avoid walking on them when possible,” the USCG said.
