Elk River - 1 mile north of Paradise Point. South Oregon Coast
Just a couple miles from Port Orford comes a river that cuts the beach in half. The Elk River meets the ocean just north of Paradise Point State Recreation Site, creating a dynamic estuary where freshwater mixes with surf and tides. This area is known for clear river water, productive salmon habitat, and a patchwork of rocky shoreline and sandy beach. The river corridor upstream is popular for fishing and swimming, while the mouth of the river offers a more rugged coastal experience with tide pools, driftwood, and views toward Port Orford's headlands. — Near MP 300
It also comes with Tseriadun State Rec Site nearby.
The landscape shifts quickly here: forested slopes give way to open beaches, and the river's flow changes with seasonal rains. Visitors often come for the sense of transition - where a coastal river completes its journey - and for the quiet, uncrowded nature of the shoreline compared to more developed access points nearby.
However, the Elk is a handful when it comes to hiking. Oregon officials say it's really only passable in milder weather seasons like summer and the warmth of September and maybe early October. Otherwise, it's not safe, even in low tides.

That means most of the time it blocks the way to or from Cape Blanco, if you're on this windy beach.
By some standards the Elk River is a somewhat short one, with its headwaters in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Depending on how you count it from what source, it's a hair under 40 miles – but some estimates measure it at 29 miles. Parts of it, according Curry Watersheds Partnership, get high into mountainous areas to about 4,000 feet, and a small section wanders into Coos County.
It's also a bit of a steep river.
Geology and Landscape:
The upper basin is typefied by steep, narrow valleys carved into the Klamath Mountains, with tributaries dropping quickly through forested slopes. These gradients create cold, clear water and high-quality salmon habitat-one of the river's defining features, making things even more interesting.
This mix of steep mountain geology and coastal processes gives the Elk River a rather sharp transition from rugged interior to wide open shoreline.
Recreation on the Elk River
Fishing is likely the main spot found, with some areas way upstream OK for boating. Cutthroat trout is the biggie, according to ODFW. Various campgrounds exist far upstream, such as Sunshine Bar Campground and others.
