(Lincoln City, Oregon) – A couple of new pedestrian features on the Oregon coast and improvements in Salem: Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) recently outlined some new projects coming up. They involved more safety at Lincoln Beach and Tillamook, while the next week sees traffic shifts on I-5.

ODOT said it plans to install enhanced crosswalks at Willow Street in Lincoln Beach and at Makinster Road in Tillamook – two different ends of the coastline. The upgrades will add median pedestrian islands, rapid-flashing beacons, new street lighting and ADA-compliant curb ramps.

The agency said the goal is to make crossings more visible and give pedestrians a safer place to wait between traffic directions.

“When we start construction in 2027, you can expect shoulder and lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic as needed - construction noise and delays,” ODOT said.

They literally moved a highway down in Salem, but that is not finished yet. Traffic changes on I-5 are moving ahead after a successful shift of southbound lanes into newly widened and paved sections. ODOT expects the northbound shift to go just as smoothly.

They will be moving northbound traffic back to the original lanes beginning at 9 p.m. on August 13, with work finishing by 5 a.m. on August 14. Southbound traffic will not be affected. Drivers are urged to slow down and watch for crews in the work zone.

Then there's a little more work happening on another area. A 48-hour closure is also set for the northbound Commercial Street off-ramp and the northbound Delaney Road on-ramp, beginning at 6 a.m. on August 17. Crews will be correcting the driving surface, paving and making additional repairs during the around-the-clock closure.

The southbound Commercial Street on-ramp will close nightly on August 19 and 20 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for similar repair and paving work.

ODOT said crews will continue southbound shoulder work and additional improvements in the northbound lanes as they move toward reconnecting the Commercial Street and Delaney Road on- and off-ramps.
