(Seaside, Oregon) – Twice every year, SOLVE holds the big beach cleanup on the Oregon coast, and the fall installment is coming in late September. Call it a “prequel” of sorts, if you will, but SOLVE is sending out an early call for groups and communities on the coast to join – a couple weeks or so before it sends out the usual announcements to the general public.
Coastal communities have already shown what coordinated volunteer action can accomplish along Oregon’s shoreline. After 18 cleanups on July 5 drew 667 volunteers and removed 7,393 pounds of litter, SOLVE is urging coastal residents, businesses and community groups to help carry that momentum into September.
From September 18 - 27, SOLVE’s annual Beach & Riverside Cleanup will mobilize volunteers across Oregon and Southwest Washington to remove litter, marine debris and invasive species from beaches, rivers and waterways. The effort includes International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19, part of a global campaign focused on protecting coastlines from pollution.
SOLVE is seeking additional coastal cleanup leaders to host projects during the September event window. No prior experience is required. The organization provides supplies, permitting guidance, volunteer registration support and other resources to make leading a cleanup straightforward.

Stefanie Wich-Herrlein of SOLVE said it's a more tightly-beamed message towards residents and organizations on the coast.
“We’re especially focused on building up the number of projects before we do the larger volunteer-facing push, so people have more opportunities to choose from when we start promoting participation more broadly,” she said.
How to Get Involved

– Those interested in hosting a coastal cleanup can learn more and sign up at solveoregon.org/beach-riverside
– Coastal residents who cannot lead a project are encouraged to join an existing cleanup or help spread the word
There are always less meeting areas on the south Oregon coast when these events happen, so SOLVE is also hoping for greater involvement there.
