August is officially Oregon Albacore Month, and the Oregon Coast Visitors Association is marking the occasion with a statewide “10 Days of Tuna” campaign. Stacey Gunderson, the association’s global sales and marketing coordinator, said the effort is designed to spotlight Oregon-caught albacore and encourage residents and visitors to buy directly from coastal fleets and local markets.

And Florence is really getting in on the action.

Gunderson said the daily posts, running August 1–10, 2026, will highlight what makes Oregon albacore unique, how the fishery operates, where to buy tuna from boats or retailers, how restaurants feature it, cooking tips, the economic value of the fishery, and its sustainability. She said the goal is to “excite eaters,” help them find local tuna, and inspire them to use Oregon albacore fresh in season or year-round in frozen, canned, or pouched form.

Florence is among the coastal communities participating in the promotion. Bettina Hannigan, president and CEO of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber is delighted to be a part of this.

“Commercial fishing vessels like the Aleta and the Teresa Lee operate out of the Port of Siuslaw in Florence, providing fresh Albacore tuna directly to the public and local restaurants during the summer season,” she said.

Hannigan said he Aleta typically docks at Slip A-13 in front of Novelli’s Crab & Seafood, offering whole tuna straight off the boat. The Teresa Lee is usually moored on A Dock during peak tuna months, July through September, for dockside sales.

Florence businesses Novelli’s Crab & Seafood and The Krab Kettle also serve as seasonal sources for salmon, crab, tuna, and other local catch. Novelli’s operates as a floating fish market on the West Marina docks, while The Krab Kettle sits at 280 Highway 101 next to the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce office and gallery. Both buy directly from the fleet and supply walk-in customers as well as restaurants.

Hannigan noted that availability changes daily because fishing trips depend on weather, ocean conditions, and migratory patterns. She advised buyers to call the Port of Siuslaw Marina Office at 541-997-3040 for daily updates on which boats are in with fish. She also reminded customers to bring ice and large coolers, as whole albacore are sizable fish and require proper handling for transport.

The 10-day campaign will be shared through @thepeoplescoast and @oregonalbacore, offering facts about the fishery, recipes, and stories from fishermen.

The Krab Kettle can be reached at 541-997-8996. Novelli’s is available at 541-639-7689 or through novelliscrabandseafood.com.
