Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) just announced it has plans to remove more than 150 dead or declining trees in Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park, a project that will require a temporary closure of the campground for several days. Oregon coast officials say the exact dates and length of the closure are still being finalized.
Kathryn Charlton, Coastal Region Forester, said the agency’s hazard-tree inspection program is essential for visitor safety.
“OPRD implements a hazard tree inspection program that is crucial for identifying trees that are exhibiting signs of health decline and could become hazardous to people and infrastructure,” said Kathryn Charlton, Coastal Region Forester.

The removal work is scheduled to begin in January 2027 and will take roughly six weeks. A contractor will take out about 20 dead or unhealthy trees in the Cleawox day-use area near Cleawox Lake, along with approximately 145 trees in the campground. Loop H will see the largest impact, with around 55 shore pines slated for removal. Several large Sitka spruce with decay and structural issues will be removed from Loops A, B and C.
Tree maintenance and removal are routine parts of park stewardship, and officials say updates about the closure will be posted on the park web page and Oregon State Parks social media channels.
“We’re providing this early notice so folks can plan accordingly with their camping plans,” said Park Manager Ryan Warren. “This campground is a popular destination, so we wanted to give visitors advance notice of this hazard tree project.”

Some of the removed logs will be donated to the Siuslaw Soil and Water Conservation District and the Smith River Watershed Council for use in stream restoration projects. Portions of certain large trees will be left standing as snags, which provide important nesting, feeding and denning habitat for birds and small mammals that rely on the park’s forested environment.
