(Yachats, Oregon) – Waves along the north Oregon coast and south Washington coast are going to get fairly dangerous for mariners, but those on the beaches may have to take some extra caution. Waves as high as 15 feet are on their way – which could also mean a decent show at rocky areas like Oceanside, Depoe Bay or Yachats.
These won't be large enough to make for the towering displays at Cape Disappointment or Shore Acres near Coos Bay, however.
A hazardous seas watch has been issued for the inner coastal waters from Cape Shoalwater (Willapa Bay) to Florence, in effect from late Friday night through Sunday morning. The NW said that very steep, dangerous seas of 11 to 16 feet are possible during this period, creating conditions that could capsize smaller vessels or cause damage to boats caught offshore. A brief period of Small Craft Advisory-level winds may develop several hours before the hazardous seas arrive. Mariners are urged to reconsider travel plans and avoid heading out during the expected peak of hazardous conditions.
As the weekend ramps up, so will offshore waves. While the hazardous seas watch will more affect mariners than beach walkers, when waves get over ten or 13 feet it starts to get iffy on beaches. Jetties and the edges of rocky areas will not be good places to hang out.
