OCSR recently announced this addition to its summer calendar, touting a small handful of nighttime steam-powered Moonlight Excursions between Garibaldi and Wheeler. And no, you won't need night vision glasses.

The railroad says these limited runs will be “special occasions,” offering passengers an evening on the rails with drinks, live music and coastal scenery that unfolds in the fading light – and hopefully beneath the stars as well (it is the coast, after all).

Each trip is a three-hour-round-journey, departing Garibaldi and heading north as the sun sets. The return ride brings views of Tillamook Bay, Nehalem Bay and the Pacific Ocean in evening glow. A rotating lineup of musicians will perform onboard, with the gigs varying by date.

Powering the train is the century-old McCloud River Railroad No. 25 steam locomotive, a highlight for rail fans and history buffs alike. It's been in a couple of movies.

The excursions are limited to ages 21 and older, and the railroad is leaning into the theme with local beer and wine available throughout the ride. Featured pours come from Pelican Brewing, Freight Beer and Nehalem Bay Winery. Food from Garibaldi’s Twins Ranch Café can be pre-ordered when booking or purchased onboard, and every passenger receives a complimentary sweet treat at the halfway point. Additional food and beverages - including non-alcoholic options - will be sold during the trip, and riders who choose ticket tiers without drink or food packages can still purchase items onboard.

The first of these happens tomorrow, July 11.

Moonlight Excursion dates are July 25, August 1, 22 and 29, and September 19.

Ticket options include:
Train ride with drinks included - $67
Train ride with food included - $68
Train ride with both drink tickets and food included - $77
Train ride only - $57
