Tsunami Advisories Canceled on Oregon Coast, Washington Coast

(Manzanita, Oregon) - Tsunami advisories all canceled.

Earlier article remains for reference

As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, a tsunami advisory is still in effect for most of the US coastline, including the Washington and Oregon coast, according to the NWS National Tsunami Warning Center. These are in place until further notice, and it is unknown when they will be canceled.

A magnitude 8.8 earthquake offshore from Russia took place a little after 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The result was a tsunami warning for Hawaii and parts of California, and tsunami advisories for Oregon and Washington.

This was upgraded from a tsunami watch.

It was possibly the sixth largest quake ever on record.

Scientists have seen a good deal of wave oscillation, but so far nothing major has been visible on the beaches. Extra wave height of no more than a foot has been logged. Experts are more worried about unusually heavy currents beneath the waters, which could spell trouble for harbors as they did in 2011's tsunami from Japan. Oregon and Washington beaches are still considered a possible hazard, however. It's even possible the situation could worsen. Under this advisory are Port Angeles, Westport, Long Beach, Warrenton, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Rockaway Beach, Tillamook Bay, Oceanside, Pacific City, Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Newport, Yachats, Florence, Coos Bay / Charleston, Bandon, Gold Beach and Brookings.

Even so, many coasties are approaching this with a bit of humor. Seaside Aquarium's Keith Chandler told Oregon Coast Beach Connection: "There was one structure that was damaged in Seaside. Someone had foolishly built a sandcastle near the water line and the massive 1 foot wave demolished the entire castle. OH THE HUMANITY !!!"
