(Newport, Oregon) - A high surf advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday (today) through all of the Oregon coast and Washington coast, with waves as high as 20 to 25 feet in most of Oregon's shores. (Photo of Depoe Bay, King Tides / Rick Poecker)
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the alerts, and meanwhile has some predictions for the beginning of king tides this week that may prove interesting.
“Large waves and hazardous surf conditions,” the NWS said of Saturday. “Breakers up to 20 to 25 feet.”
On the south Oregon coast, waves will top out more around 17 to 20 feet.
The advisory covers the South, North, and Central Oregon Coast, as well as all coastal areas of Washington. This includes towns of Port Orford, Bandon, Florence, Newport, Lincoln City, Rockaway Beach, Seaside, Long Beach, Westport and the Olympic Peninsula ocean beaches.
Forecasters warn that destructive waves may overtop beaches, jetties, and coastal structures without warning. Individuals standing on rocks or jetties risk being swept into the surf, and minor beach erosion could impact nearby properties and infrastructure. Elevated water run-up is anticipated along beaches and low-lying shorelines.

Sneaker waves are also a very big concern due to the combination of high surf and long-period swells. Officials urge beachgoers to exercise extreme caution, remain vigilant near the water, and closely supervise children and pets.
Some of this action may return later in the week, as king tides happen November 5 through 7.
However, keep in mind king tides are only dramatic when combined with large wave events. That recipe is somewhat in the works but not guaranteed. What's the Difference Between King Tides and Oregon / Washington Coast Storm Wave Events?
The NWS said this weekend gets rather rough up on the northern half of the coastline and the south Washington coast. However, seas drop off to 10 feet or below after Sunday. Then, things start to ramp up again with seas getting closer to 18 feet at times just as king tides kick in on Wednesday.

Shore Acres (Oregon's Adventure Coast) - The south coast probably won't be like this for king tides
Larger waves are created by storm and wind conditions far offshore, and those conditions are leading to current wave forecasts.
“Looking ahead to the long-term forecast, chances for further gusty winds out of the south and attendant rough seas over 15 ft increase Wednesday into Thursday as another system tracks into the Northwest,” the NWS said.
Current predictions don't see wave height getting quite as big from Reedsport down into Brookings. Wednesday is at the moment only showing seas as high as 14 feet, but a long period of 12 seconds could add some hazards. This – so far – doesn't look as if Shore Acres will see massive waves (check the Coos Bay weather page for wave predictions as well).
Even so, the NWS said the southern coast will still snag some storm action offshore that could translate to higher waves.
“The pattern will remain active next week with a series of disturbances expected to produce episodes of strong southerly winds and high to very high seas. In other words, hazards are likely middle of next week,” the NWS said.
