(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – A fair amount of beach alerts have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) from the upper half of the Oregon coast all the way through the Olympic Peninsula beaches of Washington. A beach hazards statement remains in effect from late Wednesday through Thursday evening for the Central Oregon Coast northward to the South Washington Coast, including Clatsop and Tillamook counties. The NWS warns that sneaker waves will be possible during this period.
“Waves can run up significantly farther on a beach than normal, including over rocks and jetties,” the NWS said. “Sneaker waves can suddenly knock people off of their feet and quickly pull them into the frigid ocean which may lead to serious injury or drowning.”
The agency said that beach hazards statements are issued when sneaker waves are likely to create dangerous surf conditions. Beachgoers are urged to stay alert, keep a close eye on the ocean, and supervise children carefully. Those digging for razor clams should remain especially cautious and watch for incoming waves. Officials advise staying out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions. Additional information is available at weather.gov/portland.

Farther north, a high surf advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 10 a.m. Thursday for the Northern Washington Coast and the Grays Harbor County Coast. The NWS reports that large breaking waves are expected along the shoreline. These waves can move driftwood and debris, crash over rocks and jetties, and sweep people into the ocean. Localized beach and coastal erosion is also anticipated.
Residents and visitors are urged to stay well back from the surf, keep children and pets close, and pay attention to tides, posted warnings, and barriers.
