(Reedsport, Oregon) - Rough seas and somewhat dangerous waves are on the menu for the Oregon coast tonight and tomorrow (Saturday). Things calm down Sunday, likely leaving some good beachcombing opportunities, but the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued some alerts for both halves of the coastline for right now. (Sneaker wave caught by Seaside Aquarium)
A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 10 p.m. PST this evening for the beaches of Curry, Coos, and Douglas counties. This includes towns of Coos Bay, Bandon, Brookings, Gold Beach and Port Orford.
“There is a moderate risk of sneaker waves on southern Oregon beaches through late this evening,” the NWS said. “Sneaker waves have the potential to run up farther on the beach and could catch beachgoers by surprise. To stay safe, please keep your eye on the ocean and stay off logs, rocks or jetties. Call 911 immediately if you see someone swept into the ocean.”
The NWS said these sudden waves can knock people off their feet, sweep them into the ocean, or shift large logs capable of crushing or trapping anyone nearby.
Authorities recommend staying off rocks, logs, and jetties and keeping a safe distance from the water's edge. A detailed map of the affected coastline is available through the National Weather Service at https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?wfo=mfr.
For the northern half, the threats go on a bit longer. This includes Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Rockaway Beach, Pacific City, Lincoln City, Newport and Yachats.

A moderate threat of sneaker waves is expected along the north Oregon coast Friday through Saturday, Feb. 27–28, and officials are urging beachgoers and razorclam diggers to use extra caution. The National Weather Service advises visitors to stay alert to incoming waves and keep children and pets well away from the surf zone.

For mariners, there's more to consider. A northwesterly swell today continues to bring seas around 9 to 12 ft with wave periods around 14 to 16 seconds. While the swell will decrease slightly tonight into Saturday, north to northeasterly winds will increase, bringing gusts up to 25 kt over the outer waters and up to 15-20 kt over the inner waters during Saturday morning and afternoon. As a result, a Small Craft Advisory will remain in effect for all the waters until 10 PM Friday, then for just the outer waters south of Cape Falcon until 4 PM Saturday. Into Sunday, winds weaken and shift easterly, while seas decrease to around 5 to 6 ft.

Seas and winds will likely decrease further heading into Monday, then increasing towards Small Craft conditions Tuesday into late next week as a frontal system approaches. Seas will likely stay under 10 ft after that.
