(Banks, Oregon) – Part of Highway 6 towards the Oregon coast is going under the knife again, but this time it's a city-led project where construction begins on a new roundabout at the intersection of OR 6 and NW Aerts Road. It's a project put together by the City of Banks and Washington County to improve safety and handle future traffic growth. The work is funded through a mix of local and private sources.
Crews have already been on site relocating utilities, and activity will increase as workers build a temporary bypass road. Traffic will shift to this bypass once construction on the roundabout begins.
There should be a fairly minimal impact on heading to and from the Oregon coast. However, ODOT said drivers should expect daytime construction, traffic shifts, shoulder closures on OR 6, and periodic access restrictions at NW Aerts Road and NW Washington Avenue. Local traffic may need to use alternate routes. Heavy equipment, truck traffic, construction noise, delays, and debris will be common throughout the work zone.
Officials say the roundabout is the result of a study that evaluated several options, including stop signs and traffic signals. With support from ODOT, the agencies selected a single-lane roundabout with a separate westbound right-turn lane as the most effective long-term solution. Other alternatives would not meet projected traffic demand and could lead to increased congestion and rear-end crashes.
“Roundabouts reduce conflict points and slow traffic, which improves safety,” ODOT said. “This design will accommodate the vehicles that use the intersection today, including school buses, farm equipment and large trucks.”

More information about expected construction impacts is available through the project’s archived online open house.
