(Seaside, Oregon) – It's not every day you get to loaf around the beach and then dive brain-first into what's going on around you. Those grains of sand and the life inhabiting it are full of fascinating surprises. (Photos Seaside Aquarium)
So, the north Oregon coast town of Seaside brings just that opportunity.
The Seaside Beach Discovery Program returns in July and August, offering free, hands-on learning on the sand in front of the Seaside Aquarium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on select dates. This year’s schedule includes July 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 30 and 31, along with August 7, 8, 14, 15, 20 and 21.
The program sets up at 200 North Prom, directly on the beach.
Now in its 31st year, the long-running effort invites summer visitors to explore the natural world they’ve come to enjoy. Staff members from the Seaside Aquarium greet guests of all ages with personal attention, hands-on displays, historic photos and wide-ranging conversations about the beach environment.
Interactive stations feature microscopes showing plant and animal plankton, amphipods and seaweed.

“We have many historical photos to help people compare human and geological changes over time,” the aquarium said. “We add shells and other tideline discoveries to reinforce the idea that an ever-changing ocean can lead to important changes for people, plants, and animals.”
A popular signpost display highlights the many flying and swimming species that make long annual migrations and use the local beach as a rest stop.
Staff also bring out tools such as tide tables, wind gauges, thermometers and salinity gauges to compare daily - and sometimes hourly - changes on what can appear to be a static shoreline. Those measurements lead to discussions about beach safety, gravity, the moon and tides, sand movement, upwellings, rip currents and the food chain. The goal is to help visitors see the interconnected system of sand, water, air, plants, animals, the earth and the moon, and how humans fit into that process.

Before the program opens each morning, staff record wind speed, air and ocean temperatures, salinity and tide data. They collect plankton and tiny shoreline creatures and note anything unusual. Throughout the day, conversations evolve as visitors come and go - some staying only a few minutes, others lingering for half an hour or more.
Launched in 1995, the Seaside Beach Discovery Program was created to help the public view the beach not just as a place for recreation, but as a thriving ecosystem.
The program is weather-dependent and may be canceled or packed up early if conditions become too rainy or windy.
