(Portland, Oregon) – Throughout the Pacific Northwest, and indeed much of the world, there will be blood in the sky next week.
Well, a blood moon – to be exact. And it won't even be red. It's more of an orange. You will be able to see it – weather permitting – along the Oregon and Washington coastlines, as well as Portland, Salem, Madras, Eugene, Spokane, Seattle, Camas and Bandon.
Jim Todd, astronomy expert with Portland's OMSI, told Oregon Coast Beach Connection that this total lunar eclipse will take place on the morning of Tuesday, March 3, when the Full Moon passes directly into Earth's umbral shadow.
“ This is a 'central' eclipse, meaning the Moon's disk passes directly through the center of Earth's shadow," Todd said.." While the Moon has no light of its own, it shines by reflecting sunlight; during this event, Earth blocks that direct light. Instead of going dark, the Moon will take on a deep reddish glow caused by Earth's atmosphere scattering sunlight – a phenomenon that gives the Blood Moon its name.”
The event will be visible across North and South America, Europe, and much of Asia and Australia. Lunar eclipses are safe to view without eye protection, whether with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope.
Total Duration: 5 hours and 39 minutes.
Totality: The Moon will be fully eclipsed for 58 minutes.
Peak View: At maximum eclipse, the Moon will appear above the southwestern horizon.
The eclipse occurs in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
