South Oregon Coast Fire Danger Levels Now 'High' - Curry, Coos, Douglas Counties

(Coos Bay, Oregon) – Fire season in Oregon is about to jump to new levels.

Officials on the south Oregon coast say fire danger is about to rise sharply, with the Coos Forest Patrol and Bandon Police Department confirming that the region will move to high fire danger beginning Monday.

This - so far - does not include beach fires or designated campgrounds. It may still get elevated to that.

The Coos Forest Protective Association reports that the change takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Monday, July 20, covering state, private, county, unincorporated communities and BLM forestlands across Coos, Curry and western Douglas counties. Industrial Fire Precaution Levels will stay at Level 1 in some zones and Level 2 in others, but public restrictions will tighten.

Starting Monday, campfires, cooking fires and other open flames will only be allowed in designated, hosted or managed campgrounds. Non-industrial power saw use, metal cutting or grinding, mowing dried grass and other spark-producing equipment will be limited to before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. All other existing public fire restrictions remain in place.

- Debris burning is prohibited at all times
- Smoking is prohibited in dry vegetation
- Use of fireworks is prohibited at all times
- Use of skylanterns, exploding targets, and tracer/incendiary ammunition is prohibited at all times
- Firefighting equipment is required when traveling forestland roads
- Campfires are only allowed at Designated, hosted and managed campgrounds
- Non-industrial powersaw use is allowed before 10am or after 8pm
cutting, grinding, or welding of metal is allowed before 10am or after 8pm
- Mowing of dried cured grass is allowed before 10am or after 8pm
- Any other spark emitting internal combustion engine not specifically mentioned is allowed before 10am or after 8pm

Countywide burn bans are already in effect across Oregon, with coastal counties issuing nearly identical rules. In Lincoln County, the Fire Defense Board and Oregon Department of Forestry have enacted a debris-burning ban through October 15 due to increasingly dry conditions. Officials say the consistent dates help residents plan ahead, though individual districts may adjust based on local weather.

The Lincoln County ban applies only to yard-debris burning. Recreational campfires, propane or patio fireplaces and charcoal grills are still allowed unless fire-weather conditions warrant additional restrictions.

“With warmer temperatures and drier conditions, the risk of wildfire has increased,” said the BPD. “We encourage everyone to review the current fire restrictions, use extreme caution with any activity that could spark a fire, and remain vigilant while enjoying the outdoors. Every effort to prevent wildfires helps protect our communities, first responders, and natural resources.”
