(Warrenton, Oregon) – The very last of the king tides this season is coming up quick, going January 1 through 4 along the Oregon coast and mostly January 2 through 4 along the Washington coastline. Photo courtesy Mike Decker / Oregon King Tides Project - Rockaway Beach.
There's not a lot that's new and there likely won't be very many spectacular waves, although the very highest of the high tides may make some beaches more dangerous than usual. However, wave height just offshore is nothing to write home about, not like when last year's tidal events happened to coincide with the hefty storms.
The one thing that's new and a bit unusual: this time around there are four dates for king tides on Oregon beaches. There are almost always simply three days.
Both states need help photographing coastal areas during this, in order to help scientists figure out how the landscape will look with future sea rise.
Upload your photos to the MyCoast app or website for Washington, and in Oregon it's the Oregon King Tides site. They're also hoping to get more from a wider variety of areas.
At Westport, high tides arrive at 11:07 a.m. on January 2 at 11.1 feet, at 12:01 p.m. on January 3 at 11.2 feet, and at 12:52 p.m. on January 4 at 11.0 feet.

At La Push, high tides occur at 10:40 a.m. on January 2 at 10.7 feet, and at 11:33 a.m. on January 3 at 11.8 feet. The final day on January 4 it comes in at 12:24 p.m. at 10.7 feet.
On the southern Washington coast and Ilwaco, things are a little offset. High tides arrive at 10:27 a.m. on January 1 at 9.5 feet, at 11:23 a.m. on January 2 at 9.6 feet, and at 12:17 p.m. on January 3 at 9.6 feet.
Morning high tides on the north Oregon coast arrive late in the morning through the first days of January. They occur at 10:04 a.m. on January 1, 10:58 a.m. on January 2, 11:51 a.m. on January 3, and 12:42 p.m. on January 4, with heights ranging from about 8.7 to 9.0 feet. This is utilizing the Nehalem Bay tide tables, so actual tide times will differ slightly at other locations.

Morning high tides on the south Oregon coast arrive just before midday through the first week of January. They come in at approximately between roughly 8.9 and 9.1 feet (as listed for Port Orford, and occur at 8:57 a.m. on January 1, 9:50 a.m. on January 2, 10:43 a.m. on January 3, and 11:34 a.m. on January 4.
Don't look for a major commotion at the usual hotspots, like Cape Disappointment near Ilwaco or Coos Bay-area's Shore Acres. Wave height needs to be above 16 or 20 feet, and it's not going there this week.
On the north coast through Washington coast, wave height doesn't get higher than 7 feet on Thursday and Friday, and perhaps a foot less on the south Oregon shoreline.
King Tides events also happen along the interior seas of Washington, with slightly different dates for Seattle, Port Angeles, Bellingham, Olympia and Shelton.
What else happens with King Tides on the Oregon coast and Washington coast?
There is again a photo contest (with prizes), but there are new categories and even viewing parties.
Rhiannon Bezore, with the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, heads up the Oregon King Tides Project.
She said there are the usual categories this year: Coastal Flooding, Coastal Erosion and Wave Action, Impacts on Bays and Estuaries, and Comparison Shots.
“And Youth Photographers, which is a new category for participants under 18 as part of our education outreach with Oregon Shores,” Bezore told Oregon Coast Beach Connection.
