(Tillamook, Oregon) - Some amount of work in the Oregon Coast Range may result in a bit of traffic issues to and from the beaches along Highway 6, but otherwise the construction projects from ODOT are quiet for the summer. (Gold Beach photo courtesy ODOT)
There is unpleasant news for some coastal projects that were set to get going this summer or fall, and some work on the south coast is slowly coming into focus.
Road conditions along Highway 6 may be affected this month as the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) undertakes tree removal work in the Coast Range. The project, focused between mileposts 29 and 30 on OR 6 between Tillamook and Banks, is aimed at eliminating hazard trees—those compromised by age, fire, or disease. The work is scheduled through July 17, with another round planned for July 21 to 24, though officials note the schedule may shift.

Elsewhere in the region, a previously scheduled chip seal project on OR 34 between Waldport and Corvallis has been canceled due to what ODOT describes as an immediate and significant funding shortfall. The agency has confirmed the suspension of several planned maintenance initiatives and announced staff layoffs in response to budget constraints.

“We are delaying or canceling some planned maintenance activities,” ODOT said in a public statement. “Without new revenue or spending flexibility, we’re forced to make deep cuts and lay off hundreds of people. We will continue to do everything possible to prioritize safety and minimize disruptions, but we ask for your understanding and patience.”
Meanwhile, planning continues for a major pedestrian improvement initiative on the south Oregon coast. The ADA curb ramps project, currently in design phase, will involve upgrades to approximately 149 sidewalk locations in Brookings, Gold Beach, Myrtle Point, and Roseburg. Construction is slated to begin between August and September 2025, with completion expected by June 2026. The project aims to enhance accessibility throughout key southern coastal communities.
