(Ilwaco, Washington) – The annual cleanup that's sort of the Washington version of Oregon's vast efforts is almost here. Washington State Parks is inviting volunteers to mark Earth Day weekend - April 25 - by helping remove marine debris from beaches and shorelines during the annual Washington Coast Cleanup.
As a member of the Washington Clean Coast Alliance, the agency co-hosts the statewide effort, which brings together locals and visitors who want to protect Washington’s coastal ecosystems.
It's an inner coast and outer coast affair. Cleanup events will take place at sites along both the Pacific Coast and the Salish Sea, with State Parks hosting volunteer operations at eleven parks: Cape Disappointment, Fort Flagler, Fort Townsend, Fort Worden, Grayland Beach, Griffiths-Priday, Mystery Bay, Ocean City, Pacific Beach, Shine Tidelands and Twin Harbors.

State Parks partners with Washington CoastSavers to coordinate three major cleanup events each year. The need for volunteers continues to grow.

Grayland, Washington
“From 2022 to 2025, there was a jump from 59,477 pounds to a staggering 163,443 pounds of garbage collected off our beaches,” said WSP. “Of that total, 584 volunteers collected 13,203 pounds of debris at last year’s Washington Coast Cleanup alone.”
On top of its call for general volunteers, State Parks also works with Grassroots Garbage Gang, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and the Surfrider Foundation.

Just like the Oregon coast, volunteers are encouraged to dress for changing weather. It, too, can be a handful. Coordinators also say you should wear sturdy footwear and bring lunch and water. Cleanup supplies will be provided at check-in, though reusable gloves are recommended. Each check-in station will also serve as a drop-off point for collected debris.
A full list of participating beaches and pre-registration details is available at CoastSavers.org. A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to state-managed lands on April 25.
