The Coast Guard rescued two people Monday after their boat began taking on water near the Coquille River South Jetty in Bandon, according to the agency.
The south Oregon coast has been fairly calm lately, when it comes to rescues and incidents. However, a bit farther north, Sector Columbia River watchstanders received a 911 relay at 10:59 a.m. reporting a 14-foot pleasure craft in distress with two people aboard.
Quite a few personnel went into action. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend was diverted from a nearby training flight, and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Coos Bay was launched.
Bandon Fire Department crews reached the scene at 11:37 a.m., pulling both people from the vessel and positioning them on the jetty rocks for a helicopter hoist.
The Dolphin helicopter arrived at 11:53 a.m. and lifted both individuals to safety, transferring them to waiting emergency medical personnel in a nearby parking lot at 12:30 p.m.
In the video – which does not have sound – you see the slow descent of at least one rescuer down to the rocks of the south Oregon coast river. A bit later, the rescue basket with one of the pair is brought up into the helicopter.

The USCG said this was a good example of various agencies working together.

“This rescue showcases the unique relationship between the Coast Guard and local agencies, as well as how those relationships are leveraged during emergencies,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Christopher Brady, the command duty officer for Coast Guard Sector Columbia River. “Today showcased how the Coast Guard, North Coos 911 Dispatch and Bandon Fire Department can come together to save lives.”
