(Port Orford, Oregon) - Six years and six seasons. Six runs of insanely lovely tunes amid some of the most stellar scenery this region can produce. (Redfish Piano Trio, Fritz Gearhart, violin; Genevieve Feiwen Lee, piano; and Andrew Smith, cello.)
The Redfish Music Festival opens its sixth season July 24, launching ten days of chamber music across seven southern Oregon coast communities. Eleven concerts are scheduled in North Bend, Crescent City, Port Orford, Brookings, Gold Beach, Bandon, and Langlois, with the season running through August 2.
The festival’s faculty ensemble, the Redfish Piano Trio - Fritz Gearhart, violin; Andrew Smith, cello; and Genevieve Feiwen Lee, piano - begins the tour with Dvořák’s Piano Trio in F minor, Op. 65. Performances are set for July 24 in North Bend, July 25 in Crescent City, and July 26 in Port Orford.
It's going to be a veritable army of classical wizards. They will be joined throughout the festival by the Fellowship Young Artists, two resident string quartets presenting works by Debussy, Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Barber, and others. The season winds it all up on August 2 at the historic Cheese Factory in Langlois.

Several events are free to the public, including a July 29 masterclass at the Port Orford Public Library, an informal July 30 performance at Mr. Ed’s, and an outdoor community potluck August 1 at the Castaway Motel. Students under 18 may attend all concerts at no cost, and advance 2-for-1 tickets are available through Eventbrite.
“We are all looking forward to seeing our friends on the coast,” said festival director and founder Fritz Gearhart.
This year also marks a new permanent presence in Port Orford. A six-foot Yamaha grand piano owned by the festival is now housed at the Port Orford Community Center, the result of a long-running collaboration. Redfish contributed proceeds from one of its early concerts to the center’s building fund, later working with the city to design a dedicated “piano garage” for the instrument. The piano arrived this spring.
“The collaboration we had with the city has been many years in the making, and we are overjoyed to see this dream come true,” Gearhart said. “Thank you, Port Orford. I think everyone will love the piano.”
Port Orford Mayor Ann Vileisis said the instrument aligns with the city’s goals for the community center. “One goal of our community center renovation is to provide a place for our residents to be inspired - through music, theater, art, community, and more,” she said. “I am delighted that we can work with the Redfish Music Festival to bring world-class performances to Port Orford.”

An open rehearsal is planned this summer so residents can hear the piano in use, with a formal community event scheduled for September. The piano is available to renters of the community center; inquiries may be directed to Marissa Claussen at Port Orford City Hall.
