Best Stargazing on Oregon Coast? Manzanita's Overlooks Have Science Behind the Reputation

There has always been a bit of a legend about the north Oregon coast area of Manzanita: that it's warmer and calmer enough to be nicknamed the “the banana belt of the north coast.”

One year, we here at Oregon Coast Beach Connection looked into it, expecting to find something to debunk. Instead, we stumbled upon some real science. And a surprise - especially since we had already noticed the cause but not the effect.

According to Tyler Kranz of the National Weather Service in Portland, that reputation is correct.

Pieces fell into place.

Now more of another puzzle no one really knew about before are falling into place: for this very reason Neahkahnie Mountain may be the best place on the Oregon coast to stargaze.

Now there's a chunk of personal observation here that wasn't run by a scientist. : I've personally (Andre' Hagestedt, editor) seen lots of meteors from this spot over the years. More than I've seen anywhere else while cavorting around the upper half of the coastline for a good 18 years – and that cavorting was on a weekly basis quite often.

The facts are that Neakhanie helps hold back marine layers and keep them at bay. So those misty, even foggy nights aren't as frequent or as heavy at Manzanita or its overlooks. It's circumstantial evidence by observation, yes to some degree. But my bet is this is correct.

Here's the cool science behind Manzanita's fairweather rep.

Kranz said Manzanita’s tendency toward clearer skies and slightly warmer temperatures comes down to geography and seasonal wind patterns. From the Neahkahnie Overlooks - where the view stretches over the curve of the shoreline - the difference is easy to spot. The marine layer often forms a diagonal boundary, covering areas from Cape Falcon south toward Rockaway Beach and Nehalem Bay, while leaving a conspicuous opening just offshore from Manzanita.

That cloud deck is marine stratus, and Kranz said the area's concave bend in the coastline plays a major role. In spring and summer, northerly winds dominate the region. Overnight, marine stratus creeps inland depending on pressure patterns, but the shape of the shoreline at Manzanita helps keep that cloud bank pinned to the more protruding beaches to the north and south.

Not atypical of what we're talking about, but more dramatic than usual:

Daytime heating reinforces the effect. As the land warms, the marine layer scatters and retreats toward the immediate shoreline. Cannon Beach and Rockaway Beach - both more convex stretches of coast - are more likely to stay under the gray, while Manzanita often sits in a pocket of sun. Terrain adds another twist. Neahkahnie Mountain rises just north of town, forcing the northerly winds upslope. That lift generates clouds on the windward side. As the air descends the southern slope toward Manzanita, it dries and warms through compressional heating, helping to clear skies even further.

The result: a small stretch of coast that really does behave like its own micro-climate, living up to its long-standing nickname.

I can't tell you how many times I'd stop here and check out the atmosphere at night, taking in the view. And out of those there were a lot of clear nights and a lot of shooting stars. Until recently I thought I was just lucky, coming back from dinner in Cannon Beach or showing up after a long night's ride from Portland.

Lately I realized that when I did this article with Kranz a few years back, I'd inadvertantly answered my own question.

I am not saying it's 50% less foggy or misty there. No. But I am saying I'm certain your chances of seeing the cool stuff above heighten a bit.
