(Newport, Oregon) - Oregon Sea Grant’s acclaimed Shop at the Dock and “Discover Oregon Seafood” tours are officially back for the summer, offering a firsthand glimpse into Oregon's commercial fishing industry from the working waterfronts of coastal communities.
Participants are educated on seasonal catches, sustainable fishing practices, and how to safely and smartly shop for fish and shellfish directly off the boat. The programs teach the average Joe how to deal with boats on the docks and how to obtain the best quality of fish and shellfish. Participants learn about the local boats and they even get recipes for stellar seafood dishes.
Plus, they sometimes meet the fishers who caught it.
Tour stops include Ilwaco (on the Washington coast), Warrenton, Garibaldi, Newport, Winchester Bay, Charleston, Port Orford, and Brookings.

According to Oregon Sea Grant, fishermen in Newport say they are now seeing regular, repeat customers over the years coming to buy fish – all people that started at the Shop at the Docks programs in the beginning.
Tour organizers advise bringing cash, a cooler with ice, and wearing shoes with good traction - the tours involve walking up to half a mile and prolonged standing.
For groups of five or more attending Newport tours, arrangements can be made by calling (541) 648-6816.
