(Newport, Oregon) – While it may seem counterproductive with all that ocean water around, fireworks – especially those shot off by amateurs – pose a significant fire risk on Oregon coast beaches. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is urging visitors to celebrate safely and leave fireworks and explosives at home.
Indeed, fireworks remain strictly prohibited within all Oregon State Parks and along the entire ocean shore. Numerous municipal localities on the coast have even banned fireworks within their town boundaries.
Park officials highlight the serious hazards fireworks pose, especially amid peak wildfire season. High winds and dry vegetation amplify risks, and remote park locations can delay emergency response in the event of a fire. Already this summer, wildfires have forced closures or evacuations at three state parks.
Beyond fire danger, fireworks are known to disrupt sensitive coastal ecosystems. Federally protected Western snowy plover nesting areas, as well as habitats for other seabirds and marine wildlife, are particularly vulnerable.
“The lights and noise from fireworks can cause birds and other wildlife to flee in panic,” said Dawn Harris of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “On the coast, this often leads to nest abandonment, leaving young birds exposed to predators.”
Litter is another pressing concern. In the aftermath of last year’s celebrations, volunteers removed nearly 1,000 pounds of trash from Lincoln City-area beaches: fireworks debris ranked as the third most collected item.
“That debris directly impacts the ecological resilience of our beaches, oceans and wildlife,” said Laurel Hillman, ocean shore resource coordinator for OPRD. “We ask visitors to respect these restrictions for the health of our shared natural spaces.”
While the department prioritizes education, rangers may issue Class A violations - fines up to $400 - for repeated or serious fireworks violations.

Cannon Beach has always had this ban. Lincoln City has completely banned fireworks of all kinds – including the sale of them. Newport, Yachats, Waldport and Florence no longer allow personal fireworks, as does the rest of unincorporated Lincoln County.
