(Tillamook, Oregon) – A wide array of communications across a whole continent was needed Tuesday as members of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) coordinated with officials in British Columbia, California and the Oregon coast – and even a cruise ship 120 miles away.
The USCG brought together the rescue of a 74-year-old Canadian sailor Tuesday after his disabled vessel was located 489 miles off the coast of Tillamook, Oregon. The solo mariner had injuries as well.
A cruise ship diverted roughly 120 miles to reach and recover the injured mariner.
The incident began Monday when Coast Guard watchstanders in the Northwest District received a distress relay from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria, British Columbia. The report said the sailor had injured his shoulder after his 29-foot vessel, Alice, was de-masted and left without engine power while transiting through gale-force winds and 30-foot seas on a voyage from Hawaii to British Columbia.
After establishing contact through the sailor’s handheld satellite communicator, watchstanders launched a long-range rescue effort. The device allowed responders to track the vessel’s position and maintain communication.
“Because the Alice was located nearly 500 miles offshore, the Coast Guard deployed a long-range C-27J Spartan fixed-wing aircraft from Sacramento, California, to reach the scene and provide aerial overwatch,” USCG said.
The aircraft can assess sea conditions, evaluate vessel damage, and airdrop life rafts, communication equipment, and supplies to sustain survivors until a surface vessel arrives.

At the same time, the Coast Guard activated the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue system, a global network that tracks participating commercial ships. Using AMVER, watchstanders identified the nearest vessel able to assist.
The cruise ship Silver Whisper responded and diverted to the scene. A second C-27J launched to maintain communications and monitor the rescue.
The Silver Whisper crew successfully brought the injured sailor aboard and provided medical care until the ship reached Vancouver.

“This mariner’s experience and preparedness allowed the Coast Guard and other agencies to communicate with him and effect a rescue,” said Scott Giard, Coast Guard Northwest District Search and Rescue Program Manager. “His foresight to bring a satellite communicator averted a tragedy. We would also like to thank Silver Whisper for their assistance with this rescue.”
The sailor was on a solo voyage from Hilo, Hawaii, to Vancouver, a trip he had completed four times before. He was carrying adequate food, water, a life jacket, a life raft, and a satellite communication device.
