(Newport, Oregon) - Oregon's Free Fishing Weekend returns June 6 - 7, 2026, allowing everyone to fish, clam, and crab at no cost. No licenses, tags, or validations are required, including Combined Angling Tags, Columbia River Basin Endorsements, Ocean Endorsements, or two-rod validations where permitted. The free weekend applies to both residents and nonresidents. Oregon State Parks will also waive day-use parking fees on Saturday, June 6, which means a ton of freebies along the Oregon coast as well. Washington's coast and inland areas have a free fishing day on the same date.
All regular regulations remain in effect, including seasons, closures, gear rules, bag limits, and size restrictions. Anglers are encouraged to review the online regulations and check myodfw.com for any in-season updates, particularly for salmon and steelhead.
With drought conditions affecting water levels, some smaller lakes and ponds may warm earlier than usual. ODFW recommends fishing early in the day or targeting warmwater species such as bass, bluegill, and crappie.
The weekly Recreation Report highlights current fishing conditions and opportunities statewide. Anglers can also expect heavy rainbow trout stocking ahead of the weekend; details are available in the trout stocking schedule.

Crabbing and Clamming on the Oregon Coast
Free Fishing Weekend is also an opportunity to try clamming or crabbing. ODFW provides maps, instructions, and beginner resources online.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture continues to test shellfish for naturally occurring biotoxins and closes areas when levels become unsafe. As of now, razor clamming is open from the Washington border to Cape Blanco and closed from Cape Blanco to the California border due to elevated domoic acid. Crabbing remains open coastwide.
Because conditions can change quickly, visitors should check ODA's shellfish safety page or call the shellfish hotline at 1-800-448-2474 before heading out. Harvest status is available in multiple languages.

Newport Hotel Review: We loved our stay at The Inn at Nye Beach! We booked the one-bedroom family suite, which was perfect for our little family. Our daughter had her own separate room, and we appreciated having a small table to eat breakfast or enjoy dinner at. The in-room fridge and French press coffee were thoughtful touches.
