LCPD said the Oregon State Police and Newport Police Department were looking into a bias crime that had occurred on June 11 at the intersection of Highway 101 and Siletz Highway (Highway 229).

Video and images had been going around the internet showing Daniel Edward Noonan, 49, harassing a Latino fruit stand owner with racial slurs, which culminated in him destroying her property and threatening the woman – all while having a gun. When a local resident came out to protect the woman an argument ensued but Noonan eventually wandered off. (You can see some of the incidet here)

Locals had nicknamed him the "Fruit Stand Nazi."

On Wednesday, June 17, just before 4 p.m., officers had gone to the home of Noonan and attempted to take him into custody when the use of force occurred.

At one point, about 4 p.m., a 911 call was made from the area reporting a man firing a weapon. It is unclear at this point if that was Noonan or the police officers.

“On Wednesday, June 17, at 3:51 p.m., the Oregon State Police and Newport Oregon Police Department went to 1545 Siletz Highway (Hwy. 229) to arrest Noonan,” LCPD said in a statement. “Within moments of their arrival, Officers contacted a male who immediately engaged them in gunfire. Officers responded with deadly physical force.”

Noonan was critically injured in the exchange and received emergency medical treatment. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers or community members were injured.

There were initial reports of a standoff between 4 and 5 p.m. That is unclear at this point, but traffic to the area was backed up and motorists were kept out of the area for a time.

The officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave under agency policy and Senate Bill 111 protocols.

The Lincoln County Major Crimes Team, led by the Lincoln City Police Department and working with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, responded to investigate. Authorities say no additional information will be released at this time.

There is a fund started by local Jenny Nelson to help the woman whose business was destroyed by the suspect.
