Organizers say this year's event will again blend science, culinary exploration and outdoor education, offering visitors a chance to learn everything from mushroom identification basics to the latest developments in mycology research.

And much of it under the wondrous canopies of Yachats-area forests (but much of it under the roofs of various venues.)

All festival talks are free, while workshops and guided walks provide more immersive opportunities for those who want to deepen their skills (prices vary).

The festival's keynote evening will feature Heather Dawson presenting “Seeking Buried Fungal Treasure: Truffles and the Dogs Who Find Them,” a look at the specialized world of truffle hunting and the trained canines who make it possible.

Then, throughout the weekend, attendees can sit in on educational talks covering foraging fundamentals, cooking techniques and current scientific studies in the field. The festival's workshop lineup includes sessions on forest bathing, macro-photography, culinary sampling and other hands-on approaches to exploring mushrooms.

Some workshops require a fee, and while tickets are transferable, organizers note that refunds are not available.

Or you may want to hit the outdoors.

“Join us on a mushroom walk to learn how to find and identify mushrooms,” said organizers. “These educational walks are not for foraging and we will be leaving most mushrooms in place for the other walks.”

They remain one of the festival's most popular offerings, and fundamental to the whole experience. These walks are educational rather than foraging excursions, with participants learning how to spot, identify and understand mushrooms in their natural environment. Dogs are not allowed on any walk for safety reasons.

These walks are offered at two levels: beginner to intermediate sessions that introduce common edible and toxic species, taxonomy basics and identification techniques; and intermediate to advanced walks that focus on ecosystem clues, deeper taxonomic tools and forest mycology concepts. Walks cost $10, with sign-ups available online and additional slots offered at the Keynote Dinner Sales table or the Information Tent. Locations vary by walk time, and parking is limited at Cummins Creek and Cape Perpetua. Carpooling from the Yachats Commons is required for Cummins Creek walks, and a trolley will assist with transportation to some Cape Perpetua sessions.

The festival also hosts the All Things Mushroom Fair, a marketplace featuring fresh fungi, gourmet foods, mushroom-themed crafts and supplies from regional artists, cultivators and makers. Nearby, the Mushroom Exhibition and Identification Hall will showcase a wide range of local species, offering visitors a chance to learn more about the diversity of fungi found along the Oregon coast.

Festival organizers encourage participants of all ages to explore the full schedule of talks, workshops and walks, whether they are new to mushrooms or seasoned enthusiasts. Sign-ups for walks and workshops can be made online or in person during the event. https://www.yachatsmushroomfestival.org/
