(Portland, Oregon) – Some major weather changes are hitting the Pacific Northwest fast and hard this weekend. Sneaker waves along the coastline – especially the south coast – and Washington and Oregon inland areas get the first real gnarly frost of the hard. There are some hard freezes coming – albeit briefly.
A number of alerts have gone out from the desks of National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Seattle, Medfor and Portland.
On the north Oregon coast, October 11 is when you have to watch out a little more carefully than usual.
“There is an enhanced threat of sneaker waves Sunday October 11th, 2026,” the NWS said. “Waves can run up significantly farther on a beach than normal & surprise beachgoers. Sneaker waves can lift or roll large, heavy logs which can lead to serious injury or death. Keep off rocks, logs, and jetties near waterline on beaches. Use caution on beaches, never turn your back on the ocean.”
South Oregon Coast:
For the areas of Reedsport, Coos Bay, Bandon, Port Orford, Gold Beach and Brookings, the dangerous waves will be picking up. There is a “beach hazards” statement in effect from late Saturday through Monday afternoon.
This is a particularly set of sneaker waves headed for the area. Long-period swells are what usually drives these, but most sneaker events are in the 13- to 18-second range. These get nasty right off the bat.
“The west-northwest swell (around 1-2 feet) will move into the southern Oregon waters this afternoon/evening with a period over 25 seconds,” the NWS said. “Swell will then build through Sunday, peaking Sunday afternoon and evening at around 5 to 6 feet at 19 seconds. This very long period swell will result in a heightened risk for sneaker waves and wave run-ups of unusual size through Monday evening.”
Worst will be around noon or 1 p.m. when high tide hits.
While this means increased danger on beaches, it won't mean a wild show at Shore Acres. That requires at least 16 feet worth of wave height.
For areas inland through Washington, it's the first big freeze of the year, and it may be hitting larger areas like Seattle and Portland too.
Oregon Coast Range, Cascade Foothills, and Nearby Lowlands
A Frost Advisory remains in effect from midnight tonight through 9 a.m. Sunday for a broad stretch of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Affected areas include the North Oregon Coast Range and its lowlands, the Cascade Foothills in Clackamas, Marion, Linn, and Lane counties, the Outer Southeast Portland Metro, Linn County Lowlands, and the North Clark County Lowlands and South Washington Cascade Foothills. Communities such as Vernonia, Estacada, Mill City, Oakridge, Amboy, Ridgefield, and others may see temps drop hard.
“Temperatures as low as 33 to 36 degrees will result in frost formation,” the NWS said.
Forecasters say frost formation is likely and could damage sensitive vegetation. Residents are encouraged to protect outdoor plants or bring potted plants indoors overnight.
Upper Hood River Valley
A Frost Advisory also remains in effect from midnight tonight to 9 a.m. Sunday for the Upper Hood River Valley, including Parkdale and Odell. Lows are expected to fall between 33 and 36 degrees across most of the valley, with a higher chance of sub-freezing temperatures - down to 32 degrees or colder - around Parkdale and Dee.
Frost may harm tender vegetation, and gardeners are urged to cover plants or move them indoors. Most of the valley should remain just above freezing, but localized colder pockets could see more significant frost.
Foothills and Valleys of Pierce, Southern King, Thurston, and Lewis Counties
Two Frost Advisories are in place for the foothills and valleys of Pierce, southern King, Thurston, and Lewis counties. The first runs from midnight tonight to 8 a.m. Sunday, and the second from midnight Sunday night to 8 a.m. Monday. Areas including Maple Valley, Enumclaw, Morton, Prairie Ridge, and South Hill can expect lows of 34–36 degrees Sunday morning and 30–36 degrees Monday morning.
Frost is likely both mornings, with colder pockets Monday posing a greater risk to outdoor plants. Residents should take precautions to protect sensitive vegetation during the overnight hours.
