(Portland, Oregon) – The first serious frost and freeze of the season may be upon us. Much of the Pacific Northwest – mostly Oregon – could get the Jack Frost treatment overnight and tomorrow. This includes southern Washington, most of the Columbia Gorge, the Willamette Valley and Cascades (from Silverton through to Portland, Washougal and Eugene), as well as the Oregon Coast Range. The advisories run straight into Washington and Oregon coastal towns, until the Curry County line, though these are likely talking about just a mile or two inland. (Photo courtesy Seaside Aquarium)
The National Weather Service (NWS) in both states have issued a bundle of advisories that involve “brrrrr” as the operative word. Not all of it is certain: overnight low forecasts for individual towns still show the 40s most of the time.
Yet the NWS thinks that could change.
“Widespread overnight/morning low temperatures in the low to mid 30s are expected Thu night/Fri morning and Fri night/Sat morning (Oct 22-24), supporting frost development,” the NWS said. “If you have outdoor vegetation that is sensitive to cold temperatures, take necessary action now.”
Portland / Vancouver Metro
Frost Advisory: 11 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for the Portland and Vancouver metro areas, including Gresham, Troutdale, Camas, Washougal, Oregon City, Lake Oswego, Happy Valley and surrounding communities. Overnight lows of 33 to 36 degrees are expected, allowing areas of frost to develop and potentially damage sensitive outdoor plants.
Frost Advisory: 11 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for portions of the lower Columbia corridor and nearby valley locations, including St. Helens, Scappoose, Rainier and Clatskanie. Temperatures in the mid-30s will support frost formation, creating a risk for sensitive vegetation.

Columbia Gorge and Eastern Oregon
Wind Advisory: 7 p.m. Thursday to 11 a.m. Friday for the eastern Columbia River Gorge. West winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph could bring down tree limbs, blow around unsecured objects, and cause isolated power outages.
Freeze Watch: Friday evening through Saturday morning for the eastern Columbia River Gorge, Lower Columbia Basin, Yakima Valley, and Blue Mountain foothills. Overnight lows could drop into the mid-20s to around 30 degrees, threatening sensitive vegetation and unprotected plumbing.
Frost Advisory: 11 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for the west Columbia River Gorge and nearby Cascade foothill communities, including Corbett, Sandy, Brightwood, Welches, Rhododendron, Estacada and Cherryville. Lows of 33 to 36 degrees will bring areas of frost that could harm uncovered plants.
NW Oregon

Frost Advisory: 11 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday for the Tualatin Valley, North Oregon Coast Range, West Central and East Central Willamette Valley, and nearby foothills. Overnight lows of 33 to 36 degrees will allow widespread frost development, which could damage sensitive vegetation.
Freeze Warning: 11 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday for the North Oregon Coast Range Lowlands and the Benton, Linn, and Lane county lowlands, including Eugene, Albany, Corvallis and surrounding communities.
Freeze Watch: Friday evening through Saturday morning for the North Oregon Coast Range, central Willamette Valley, and Cascade foothills of Marion, Linn, and Lane counties. Sub-freezing temperatures are possible, creating a greater risk to crops, outdoor plants, and unprotected plumbing.
Central West Oregon
Frost Advisory: 11 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday for the Central Oregon Coast Range and Coast Range Lowlands. Temperatures will fall to 33 to 36 degrees, leading to areas of frost and potential damage to sensitive plants.
Frost Advisory: 11 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for the Central Oregon Coast Range and Coast Range Lowlands. Another round of temperatures in the mid-30s is expected, bringing continued frost concerns for outdoor vegetation.
