The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for much of western and central Oregon, in effect through 5 a.m. Tuesday. Forecasters are urging residents to prepare for dangerously high temperatures, with daytime highs ranging from 96 to 103 degrees and overnight lows between 60 and 70 degrees. In the Columbia River Gorge, nighttime temperatures may remain in the low to mid-70s.

The warning covers a broad swath of the region, including the Greater Portland/Vancouver metro area, the Columbia River Gorge, Corbett, Hood River Valley, the Central and Southern Willamette Valley, foothills of the Northern and Central Oregon Cascades, and the Lower Columbia and Cowlitz River Valleys.

Friday and Saturday are expected to be the peak of the heatwave, with the warmest overnight temperatures likely in urban areas from Salem northward and throughout the Columbia River Gorge. Officials advise limiting outdoor activity, staying hydrated, and checking on vulnerable individuals as conditions intensify.

“Overnight low temperatures will also be running rather warm, offering minimal relief at night,” the NWS said. “Be sure to stay cool and hydrated and check on those without air conditioning.”

Areas like Eugene, Monthmouth, southern King County (near Seattle), Silverton, and Albany are all going to get similar conditions.

The Coast Range and the Willapa Hills of Washington are under heat advisories and expected to hit close to 100.

The Oregon and Washington coast will be the only real relief, sticking to the 60s and 70s the entire time. Yet even the beach towns aren't totally immune to this.

Heat advisories are in effect for parts of north Oregon coast, even though the beaches and beach towns will likely only see the mid 70s. However, areas just barely inland are under heavier heat advisories or warnings, and temps will soar once you get into nearby foothills of the Coast Range.

Brooking lands close to or in the 80s this week, and just slightly inland from the south coast there are similar extreme warnings.

The NWS said there is an increasing chance of fire dangers in many wilderness parts of the two states, but luckily not all of it is going to dry out badly.

“Due to recent rains in the area, larger fuels (such as trees and shrubs) are not dry enough to cause rapid fire spread, but the hot weather will allow fine fuels (such as grasses) to dry out quickly, allowing for potential rapid spread,” the NWS said. “Use extra caution with potential ignition sources, especially in grassy areas. Outdoor burning is not recommended.”
