(Portland, Oregon) – In the immortal words of Jethro Tull: “Get Out of the Heat” will be the tune that should be running in your head in Oregon and SW Washington this week, with a variety of heat watches that have been turned into heat advisories. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a variety of alerts, with the red flag / lightning warnings expiring later tonight but the serious heat coming to the valley early in the week.
There were four suspected heat-related deaths in the Portland area from the last record-breaking heatwave.
“A Heat Advisory has been issued, starting 11am Monday, June 22nd through 11pm Tuesday, June 23rd," the NWS said.. "And overnight lows of 62 to 67. The watch covers the Western and Central Columbia River Gorge, the Portland–Vancouver Metro area, and the East Clark County Lowlands. Now is the time to prepare for hot temperatures: use sunscreen and wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, seek out air-conditioned locations, and be aware of cold-water shock when swimming in local rivers and lakes.”
Heat Advisory - Portland Metro, Vancouver Metro, Columbia River Gorge
A heat advisory runs from Monday morning through Tuesday evening, with temperatures possibly reaching 95 to 100 degrees. It covers the Western and Central Columbia River Gorge, the Portland and Vancouver metro lowlands, and East Clark County. These areas could well get upgraded to heat warnings.

Warm overnight lows in the low to mid-60s will limit cooling, especially in urban areas. Heat-related illnesses become more likely, though some relief may arrive Tuesday night with an onshore flow.
Heat Advisories Now Added for:
Marion and Lane Counties; Western Siskiyou County-Central Siskiyou County-South Central, Siskiyou County-Central Douglas County-Eastern Curry County and Josephine County-Eastern Douglas County Foothills-Jackson County – including Medford, Ashland, north California.

San Juan County, Foothills and Valleys of the North Cascades, Foothills and Valleys of Thurston and Lewis Counties, Lowlands of Western Whatcom County, Lowlands of Western Skagit and Northwestern Snohomish Counties, Olympia and Southern Puget Sound, Lowlands of Lewis and Southern Thurston Counties, Middle Chehalis River Valley, Willapa and Black Hills, Southern Hood Canal – Northern Hood Canal, Port Townsend Area, Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca, Foothills of the Western and Southern Olympic Peninsula, Lower Chehalis River Valley, Island County..

Red Flag Warning - Lower Columbia Basin and Central Oregon Mountains
A Red Flag Warning is in effect Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. for the Lower Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington, the Central Mountains of Oregon, and the Kittitas Valley of Washington. West winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph and humidity near 9 percent will create conditions where fires can start easily and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is discouraged.
Forecast Overview:

Seattle and Northern Washington: the early and middle week hit the upper 80s and 90s for the Emerald City and areas around there and Tacoma.
Portland Metro / Willamette Valley: The weekend stays warm and sunny with highs near 80 today and the mid-80s Sunday, then a sharp heat-up Monday through Wednesday with highs in the upper 90s to near 100, with not-so-pleasant warm nights in the upper 50s to low 60s. Central Oregon Coast: You can – mostly – get away from the heat in areas like Seaside, Cannon Beach, Lincoln City or Florence.
Morning clouds and fog clear to sun today with highs in the low 70s, followed by clear nights in the low 50s. Sunshine continues through midweek with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s Monday and Tuesday, then cooling to the mid-70s Wednesday and low 70s Thursday. Clouds increase Thursday night with a small chance of rain, and Friday brings upper-60s and another slight chance of showers.
Southern Curry Coast: It's a little cooler up in the Bandon and Coos Bay areas, but farther south things heat up a bit more. The NWS is calling for sunny through the midweek with coastal highs in the mid-60s to mid-70s and inland highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s Sunday, warming slightly Monday. Southwest Interior / Southern Oregon : Medford and other regions south of Bend and Eugene will begin to cook as well, but no warnings for those areas.
Sunny and hot with valley highs in the low to mid-90s Sunday and mid-70s to mid-80s at higher elevations. Monday reaches 95 to 100 in the valleys and mid-80s to low-90s in the mountains.
